The painting

Lars Morell has written a book about Per Kirkeby's architectural work and has been occupied in the last couple of years with examining Per Kirkeby's work as a painter.

In a discussion of the painting, Lars Morell writes: "Per Kirkeby's ceiling painting in the Lecture Theatre Building is extraordinary in that from no one place is it possible to view the whole work at the same time. Part of the painting consists of a ceiling in the entrance foyer, further on unfolding itself into a wall of the stairway, while another part of the ceiling arches gently like a hanging canopy, so one can never take in all parts of the ceiling from a single viewpoint. It is necessary to walk through the spaces to examine the sequence of events in the picture more closely".

During work on the painting Kirkeby was assisted by the decorative painters Erik Peitersen and Susan Arnild, who painted under Kirkeby's direction.

The financial support for the painting was donated by the New Carlsberg Foundation and the Rømer Foundation.
