BRITISH SPERM CELL RESEARCHER APPOINTED NEW HONORARY PROFESSOR IN BIOPHYSICS

Eric Chantler, PhD from the University of Manchester has been appointed to the position of Honorary Professor in Biophysics at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Aarhus.

The appointment of Eric Chantler is in recognition of his major contribution to research in reproduction technology – he researches into the structure and function of sperm cells using X-ray microscopy. Eric Chantler has registered a number of patents in this field, and collaborates both with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Family Health International in the USA, as well as working as a scientific consultant for a range of multinational pharmaceutical companies.

60-year-old Eric Chantler is a familiar face at the University of Aarhus, where he has been a visiting professor at the Institute for Storage Ring Facilities – an institute which houses highly advanced facilities for X-ray microscopy. X-ray microscopy is becoming increasingly important in the study of biology and medicine because the technique makes it possible to achieve a higher resolution than when using light microscopy. This is because the wavelength of X-rays is much shorter.

Eric Chantler has worked at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Manchester since 1986, and following his retirement earlier this year he was awarded a special honorary position at the University of Manchester as Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry. From 1992 to 1996 he was also the leader of reproduction medicine research at WithingtonUniversityHospital in Manchester.

Further information

The University of Aarhus awards the title of “Honorary Professor” to individuals of great expertise whose efforts we wish to recognise, and with whom we should like a closer link. Honorary Professors are not paid, and normally give a number of lectures and take part in research projects.
