Lars German Hagsten new Honorary Professor at Aarhus University

Lars German Hagsten Lars German Hagsten, PhD, has been appointed Honorary Professor at the Faculty of Science, Aarhus University, for a period of five years. He is a Senior Associate Professor of Engineering at the Engineering College of Aarhus and is responsible for developing the new graduate degree programme in architectural engineering, offered by Aarhus University in collaboration with the Engineering College of Aarhus, where he has worked since 2005.

In 1995, Honorary Professor Hagsten (39) graduated in civil engineering from the Technical University of Denmark, where he also completed his PhD as a commercial researcher in 2000. He has approximately ten years of experience from Ramboll, Birch & Krogboe (now Alectia) – where he worked as a consultant engineer and specialist leader of brickwork constructions – and later from Cowi, where he worked with design and project engineering of mainly concrete and steel constructions, as well as acting as specialist leader.

A graduate engineer degree combines acquiring deep understanding of the engineering aspects of the function of constructions, combined with a holistic understanding of the design process. To acquire an understanding of the function of constructions, practical experience is combined with scientific methodologies/results and the pedagogical presentation. Holistically oriented understanding means that an engineer must be able to sit down with an architect at the early draft stage, for example, understand how the architect works, interpret the architect’s intentions regarding the specific construction, and – based on his professional knowledge – be able to contribute creatively and constructively to creating these buildings.

Honorary Professor Hagsten has written a number of books on brick and concrete constructions, and has published two books on brickwork constructions. His scientific work is based on the theory of plasticity in modelling constructions. The theory of plasticity contains some principles that make it possible to work with clear, easily understandable physical models of the function of even complicated constructions.

The university can award the title “honorary professor” to people we wish to acknowledge for their high level of academic proficiency, at the same time as creating closer ties with us. An honorary professor normally holds lectures and takes part in research projects.
