In the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings, Aarhus University has moved up nine places to a position as number 116.

The THE ranking lists are dominated by the USA, which has seven universities in the top ten, and seventy-six universities in the top two hundred.

In Europe, the Dutch universities have made particularly significant progress, and they are represented in the new ranking lists by a total of twelve universities in the top two hundred.

Aarhus University is ranked as number forty-three in Europe and as the fifth-best university in the Nordic countries after Karolinska, Lund, Uppsala and Helsinki.

In other ranking lists of the world’s best universities, Aarhus University is placed in the top 100:

  • Shanghai: no. 86
  • QS: no. 89
  • Taiwan Ranking: no. 96
  • Leiden Ranking: no. 51 among the 100 largest universities in the world in terms of research production

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings were first published in 2010. The method behind the ranking lists is based on thirteen performance indicators in the categories of research, teaching, internationalisation and collaboration with the business sector. An annual survey of the universities’ reputation in the areas of research and teaching provides points in the ranking lists, as does the impact of research in the form of citations.

The method behind the THE ranking lists takes into account smaller universities that specialise in areas such as technology or health sciences. A good example is the California Institute of Technology – number one in the latest ranking lists – which ‘only’ has 300 tenured researchers and 2000 enrolled students.
