New head of the Department of Geoscience
With the appointment of Professor Søren Bom Nielsen as the head of the Department of Geoscience, all twelve positions as heads of departments at Science and Technology have now been filled.
2011.07.08 |
Professor Nielsen has been a professor of geological modelling at the department since 2010 – and an associate professor at the same department since 1995. He completed his PhD degree back in 1986 at the Department of Geophysics, University of Western Ontario, Canada.
His primary research field is quantitative modelling of geological processes. This includes testing regional models for long-term geological development of a multitude of geological and geophysical data. Examples are the correlation between lithospheric tension (which causes deformation) and the structure and dynamics of lithosphere and mantle; the long-term development of the typography of the passive continental margins in the North Atlantic and the Arctic; and tectonic and thermal processes in sedimentary basins as an element in the prediction of the presence of oil and gas. In his work, he also uses thermo-chronological methods. Professor Nielsen has published an extensive number of papers, including several articles in Nature.
Professor Nielsen has spent a fair amount of time abroad during his career, including a year at the University of Bergen, Norway, after receiving a grant for oil geology research from the Nordic Council of Ministers. He has also spent six months at Statoil in Stavanger, Norway, as part of the petrophysics and reservoir group.
In parallel with his research, Professor Nielsen has been involved in the management of the department, as he has been the vice head of department for research since 2009 and he is chairman of the research committee.
Professor Nielsen took up his appointment on 1 July 2011.
