The active enrolment requirement (AU’s rules)

Aarhus University's rules of 1 September 2017 on the requirements regarding active enrolment at Aarhus University 

Pursuant to Consolidation Act no. 261 of 18 March 2015 on Universities with subsequent amendments in addition to related ministerial orders, the following applies: 

Requirements regarding active enrolment for students enrolled in full-time Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes and full-time Bachelor of Engineering programmes:

1.-(1) Students enrolled in Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes as well as students enrolled in Bachelor of Engineering programmes at Aarhus University must pass at least 45 ECTS credits per academic year, however cf. subsection 2.

(2) The requirement that students must pass at least 45 ECTS credits per academic year on programmes on which the first-year exam corresponds to 45 ECTS credits or more may be waived in the first academic year of Bachelor’s degree programmes. In the Bachelor of Engineering programmes the first-year exam is the active enrolment requirement in the first academic year. 

(3) In special cases, or if the student is an elite athlete, entrepreneur or chair of a volunteer organisation under the Danish Youth Council, the university may grant exemptions from subsections 1 and 2.

2.-(1) The active enrolment requirement is a cumulative active enrolment requirement, under which students must have passed at least 45 ECTS credits after the first academic year (1st and 2nd semester), at least 90 ECTS credits after the second academic year (3rd and 4th semester), and at least 135 ECTS points after the third academic year (5th and 6th semester).

(2) No requirements regarding the inclusion of specific activities in the active enrolment requirement may be made.

 

If a student has failed to meet the active enrolment requirement in a preceding academic year, any earned ECTS credits must always be applied to fulfilling the requirement from previous years of the programme.This applies regardless of whether the course and/or exam belong to a previous or later academic year on the programme.

 

3.-(1) Students who fail to meet the active enrolment requirement pursuant to sections 1 and 2 are not permitted to continue their degree programme. In such cases, the students’ enrolment is terminated. 

(2) Termination of enrolment can only take place in the event that the university has ensured that the student has had the opportunity to make three exam attempts on the exams taken in the first year of the programme given the active enrolment requirement of 45 ECTS credits, three exam attempts on the exams taken in the second year of the programme given the active enrolment requirement of 90 ECTS, and three exam attempts on the exams taken in the third year of the programme given the active enrolment requirement of 135 ECTS credits. A review of students’ academic progress with a view to termination of enrolment is performed for the first time after the second year of the programme.

4.-(1) Applications for exemption from these rules and other rules laid down pursuant these rules must be submitted in writing and include an explanation of the reasons for the application. Applications must be submitted to the appropriate board of studies.  

Entry into force:

17.-(1) These rules come into force on 1 September 2017. Aarhus University's rules of 1 September 2016 on the requirements regarding active enrolment at Aarhus University are repealed.
