Note concerning grants made by the Aarhus University Research Foundation
The objective of the Aarhus University Research Foundation is to support academic research at Aarhus University.
Grants are issued by the foundation on the recommendation of Aarhus University. When processing applications and recommendations for grants, emphasis is attached to the quality of the research in question and to supporting objectives which help to strengthen research aimed at achieving the university’s strategic targets.
The Aarhus University Research Foundation distributes funds twice a year. The deadlines for applications are in February and September. The exact and final deadlines are stated on the university’s homepage at the address http://www.au.dk/da/tilknyt/auff. Funds are distributed in May and December.
Application forms are available on the university’s homepage during the application period at the address http://www.au.dk/da/tilknyt/auff. Applicants may only apply if their civil registration number (CPR number) has been registered in Aarhus University’s administrative IT system.
Applications regarding researchers visiting Aarhus, PhD courses at Sandbjerg and research periods spent at Møllehuset can be submitted at any time.

The foundation makes grants based on applications in the following categories:
1. Publications (electronic application form 1)
Applications can be made for support for major publications of research work, monographs, anthologies etc. for which publication in book form is regarded as being of particular importance. The university has set up a publication committee to process applications and make recommendations for grants made in this category.
2. Support for the transition from PhD to post.doc. level (electronic application form 2)Applications can be submitted by the main supervisors of excellent PhD scholars who are expected to submit their PhD dissertations for assessment before the standard deadline. The aim is to retain and attract the best and most talented researchers to Aarhus University. Applications can be made for support for a post.doc. salary for up to four months (in special cases: six months).
3. Support for the internationalisation of PhD degree programmes at Aarhus University (electronic application form 3)
Applications can be submitted by the managers of graduate schools at Aarhus University for support regarding the following purposes:
3.A. Recruiting talented researchers from abroad for PhD programmes at Aarhus University
Applications can be made for funds to support visits to Aarhus University by graduates from abroad lasting one to three months, during which time such graduates can take part in courses, summer schools, workshops and laboratory work, as well as preparing their PhD projects. During the same period there will be a qualitative assessment of such applicants with a view to potential PhD studies at Aarhus University.
3.B. Visits to Aarhus University by PhD scholars registered at a university abroad
The aim is to strengthen the internationalisation of the graduate schools at Aarhus University by giving PhD scholars from abroad the opportunity to carry out part of their PhD programme at Aarhus University. During a visit lasting three to six months, PhD scholars from abroad can take part in research collaboration, PhD courses, summer schools, workshops and laboratory work – and/or write parts of their PhD dissertations.
3.C. Visits abroad by PhD scholars at Aarhus University
Applications can be made for support for visits abroad lasting between three and twelve consecutive months. During such visits PhD scholars can take part in research collaboration, fieldwork, PhD courses, summer schools, workshops and laboratory work – and/or write parts of their PhD dissertations.
4. Visits by researchers from abroad (can be submitted at any time – electronic application form entitled ‘Gæsteforskere’ or ‘Visiting Researchers’)
Applications can be made for funds to attract visiting researchers from abroad whose visits to Aarhus University can ‘make a difference’. These visits must last at least one month. The main consideration when making priorities is that the university wishes to promote collaboration with researchers from universities of a high quality level within the main academic area in question.
5. PhD courses at Sandbjerg (can be submitted at any time – no application form needed)
Applications can be made for support for PhD courses at Sandbjerg. The aim of this support is to help strengthen Aarhus University’s PhD programmes. Applications can be made for support for board and lodging amounting to up to DKK 700 per participant per day. Applications should be submitted accompanied by a recommendation from the faculty concerned. 6. Research visits to Møllehuset (can be submitted at any time)
Applications can be submitted for grants to stay at Møllehuset, Sandbjerg with a view to giving researchers the opportunity to work with topics related to their area or to find the peace and quiet needed to carry out academic work. Normally grants can be made to cover visits lasting between two weeks and two months. Terms of research at Møllehuset can be applied for at any time and are granted on a running basis by the chairman of the foundation.
