Graduate School of Arts

On the 1 July 2011 three graduate schools, the Graduate School of Theology and the Study of Religion, the Doctoral School of Educational Research and the Graduate School of Humanities, merged to form the Graduate School, Arts. The Graduate School, Arts has approximately 300 PhD students, with around 200 of them at Aarhus Campus and around 100 at Emdrup Campus, north of Copenhagen. The Graduate School, Arts is organised into eight PhD study programmes covering all research areas under the Faculty of Arts.

PhD students follow a three-year programme after completion of a two-year Master's degree (5+3) or a four-year programme with enrolment after one year of Master's level studies (4+4).

In connection with the establishment of the new graduate schools and the amendment of the Danish University Act, work is currently under way on the formulation of new general guidelines on PhD programmes and the development of new websites for graduate schools.

The place of employment of successful applicants for PhD scholarships (4+4 or 5+3) will be within the relevant research environment, and will normally be the department at which the principle supervisor is employed (Aarhus Campus or Emdrup Campus).

New times at au.dk/en

The university’s website is being redesigned. The design and content will therefore change, and you may experience for a while that old and new sections are mixed together, and that the content is not in its usual place.

We hope that the new website will make up for any inconvenience, and that you will enjoy greater coherence throughout and find the website simpler to use.

Why are we making a mess?

In the time ahead, you will notice a mixture of old and new designs in the pages on the website.

In spring 2011, Aarhus University’s nine main academic areas were reduced to four, and the fifty-five departments became twenty-six. This was to unify the organisation and to strengthen the university’s interdisciplinary approach. We are now following suit by restructuring the entire website to ensure more coherence in the content and design.

Such an exercise takes time – and we hope you will bear with us!

Take a short cut

Under the HOT KEY at the top right, you can find links to the most frequently used content on the website, as well as the two new universes for staff and students.

Where can I find it?

Use the new mega dropdowns to get an overview of the website’s content. They open when you run your mouse over the navigation at the top.
