The University Board held a total of six meetings in 2005. The following are examples of the matters dealt with by the University Board:

• In 2005, the University Board nominated the first rector to be appointed to the University of Aarhus. Preparations for this appointment began in autumn 2004, and on 9 June 2005, the University Board was unanimous in presenting Lauritz B. Holm-Nielsen, Lead Higher Education Specialist at the World Bank, as the new rector at the University of Aarhus.

• During the year, the University Board focused on following up on the university’s development contract with the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Development. The University Board followed the work involved in complying with the 98 goals that constitute an important part of the development contract for 2005, and at the end of the year, the University Board initiated the work involved in defining the contents of the development contract for 2006–2008. Prior to Christmas 2005, a proposal had already been sent to the ministry, and the new development contract was signed in April 2006.

• The Boards of both the University of Aarhus and the Herning Institute of Business Administration and Technology (HIBAT) made a joint suggestion to the Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation and the Minister for Education that HIBAT should be amalgamated with the University of Aarhus. In early 2006, the Ministry of Education gave pre-approval for this amalgamation, and the work involved in carrying out this project will be an important focus area in 2006.

• During the year, the University Board was occupied with approving new study programmes, collaboration with other institutions, equal opportunities and planning construction work. The University Board followed the university’s overall financial situation throughout the year and adopted the budget for 2006 at its last meeting in 2005.
