News from the Rector's Office No. 23/2010
Rector presents future plans for Aarhus University
Rector Lauritz B. Holm-Nielsen is giving his summer speech in the Main Hall (Aulaen) in Aarhus on Thursday 17 June at 15.00. On this occasion, he will give an account of the further procedure of the academic development process and the University Board’s discussion of the recommendation presented by the Rector’s Office earlier the same day.
Following the rector’s speech, the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions, which can also be sent by e-mail to fu@au.dk. Any questions that are not answered at the meeting because of time restrictions will be collected as far as possible and subsequently addressed on the AU website.
The event will be streamed live at http://medarbejdere.au.dk/en/, so everyone can follow the proceedings. Large-screen events are planned at DPU (Emdrup), NERI (Roskilde, Silkeborg and Kalø), DJF (Foulum, Flakkebjerg and Årslev) and AU-IBT. Following the speech, the Rector’s Office will provide light refreshments at these events, as well as at the Ambulatory (Vandrehallen) in Nordre Ringgade.

Combined international AU summer school
Aarhus University is in the process of upgrading its summer school activities. In summer 2011, AU will launch a combined international summer school called AU Summer University. The university hopes to offer a wide range of subjects at Master’s and PhD level, organised in modules equalling 5 and 10 ECTS credits for full-time AU students, Danish and visiting students from abroad, exchange students and international full degree students. The subjects will be offered in English and the teaching is planned to be carried out by both AU lecturers and international visiting lecturers.
The International Centre (IC) is providing assistance with international marketing, logistics regarding the courses, accommodation and welcome service for students from abroad, administration connected with the recruitment of lecturers, and dialogue with international working partners.
During the late summer, the main academic areas are invited to develop a subject range in close dialogue with the IC.
If you would like the IC’s assistance in inviting international visiting lecturers, the deadline is 15 June.
NASA scientists visit Aarhus
Aarhus University astronomers have been deeply involved in work with the Kepler Satellite, which has been collecting data since 2009 about faraway stars and previously unknown planets in the Milky Way.
In this connection, more than 150 international scientists are currently visiting Aarhus University to analyse and discuss the new data. This is the first time ever that a NASA team at such a high level has been in Denmark, and the occasion is being marked by two free lectures by top international researchers.
Both lectures will be given in English, and they take place on Tuesday 15 June at 19.00–21.00 in the Per Kirkeby Lecture Theatre in the Lakeside Lecture Theatres.

Warm up for the DHL Relay Race
As a prelude to the DHL Relay Race – and to provide inspiration – Aarhus University is organising an after-work meeting about diet and exercise for all members of staff.
On Thursday 24 June at 15.00 in the Per Kirkeby Lecture Theatre in the Lakeside Lecture Theatres, Clinical Dietician Lene Bundgaard from Team Danmark will talk about the best way to put together a diet, and how eating habits influence performance.
The event is free, but registration is necessary and takes place on a first come, first served basis on AU’s DHL website. All participating teams from Aarhus University have now been published (in Danish only) on this website as well. See under AU teams (AU-hold).
