The Department of Educational Theory and Curriculum Studies at the Danish School of Education at Aarhus University invites applications for an assistant/associate professorship in the field of literacy and Danish as a school subject.

The assistant professorship is a full-time, three-year training position which begins on 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The associate professorship is a permanent position which begins on 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position is based at DPU campus Emdrup/Copenhagen or Aarhus. It is important that the successful applicant takes part in the daily activities of the department, including both teaching and supervising. Since the department is situated in both Aarhus and Copenhagen, the successful applicant should expect some travel activity between Aarhus and Copenhagen.

The position
We are seeking an innovative and dedicated applicant who will contribute to Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange. The position focuses on aspects of literacy and Danish as a school subject, and may also include participation in international comparative assessment studies and compulsory school research. We expect the successful applicant to cooperate with the research environment in curriculum studies, Danish and literacy at DPU, both in the Department of Educational Theory and Curriculum Studies and in particular with the National Centre for School Research. The successful applicant will also be expected to cooperate with colleagues in relation to the IEA studies, i.e. the PIRLS study. 
Key criteria of the assessment will be the quality of the research output, which is expected to meet international standards, and successful teaching experience at university level within the field of literacy.

Research
We are looking for a candidate who has substantial research experience in literacy with special relevance for Danish as a school subject, a person who can demonstrate skills in empirical research.
In addition, it will be considered an advantage if an applicant
• Has specific research and/or teaching experience in the field of literacy understood as the development of reading and/or writing competences
• Has specific research and/or teaching experience connected to reading and writing processes in primary or lower-secondary school
• Can demonstrate skills in collaborative and cross-disciplinary research
• Can demonstrate skills in handling various qualitative and quantitative scientific methods.

Teaching
An assistant professor will be expected to teach and supervise students at BA and MA level, whereas an associate professor will be expected to teach and supervise students at all levels (BA, MA and PhD). Both assistant and associate professors are expected to contribute to the development and application of innovative teaching methods. The position involves teaching duties as well as responsibility for the development of courses that encompass the above-mentioned fields of study. This could also include the coordination and leadership of education in the field of Danish as a school subject.

If an assistant professor is appointed he/she will be obliged to complete a course in university teaching designed especially for assistant professors.

Talent development
If an assistant professor is appointed he/she will be expected to develop his or her supervision capabilities at MA level.

If an associate professor is appointed he/she will be expected to contribute to talent development within the fields of Danish as a school subject. He/she will be expected to supervise PhD students as well as teaching and developing PhD courses.

Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance in research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with civil society actors or the public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants should document any prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange.

Qualifications
The successful applicant for the assistant professorship must have a PhD or the equivalent in literacy and Danish in relation to education or related fields, and must be able to document:
• Substantial research experience in literacy with special relevance for Danish as a school subject
• Skills in empirical research
• An internationally oriented research profile
• A relevant and internationally oriented publication profile
• Experience of or interest in participation in national and international research networks
• Experience of or interest in communication and knowledge exchange
• Experience of or interest in interdisciplinary collaboration as well as interdisciplinary research
• Experience of or the potential for obtaining external research funding
• Teaching experience at university level within the field of literacy
• Experience of or interest in interdisciplinary teaching including innovative teaching methods
• Experience of or interest in supervising student projects, and interest in researcher talent development.

The successful applicant for the associate professorship must have a PhD or the equivalent in literacy and Danish in relation to education or related fields, as well as research and teaching qualifications equivalent to those acquired in an assistant professorship, and must also be able to document:
• Substantial research experience in literacy with special relevance for Danish as a school subject
• Skills in empirical research
• An internationally oriented research profile
• A strong, relevant international publication profile
• Participation in national and international research networks
• Experience of participation in collective research projects
• Teaching experience at university level within the field of literacy, interdisciplinary teaching experience including innovative teaching methods, and mastery of academic English in the classroom
• Proficiency in languages relevant to the area of research
• Experience of interdisciplinary cooperation
• Experience of attracting external research funding
• Experience of supervising student projects and an interest in researcher talent development.

The successful applicant must be able to teach and publish in English. If the successful applicant cannot speak Danish, she/he will be required to learn Danish within a period of approximately two years.
