Please notice that due to the high number of incoming applications, we kindly ask that the application deadlines are respected since we cannot guarantee that applications submitted after the deadlines will be processed.
Online application instructions
To become an exchange student at Aarhus University, you need to fill in an online application form. If you wish to apply for housing through the International Centre, you need to fill in the housing section within the online application form. Further instructions follow below.
We recommend that you use the Internet Explorer web browser to complete the online application as many applicants have experienced problems when using other web browsers such as Firefox or Safari.
Please note: we do not accept paper based applications!
1. Self-service system and Application form
In order to gain access to the online application form you must create an account in the Aarhus University self service system. You will find directions on creating a self-service account here.
Before you create your self service account and start your application process please read the application instructions on this page carefully, including the relevant Online application instructions under step 2 and the document regarding courses under step 3.
Once you have created a self service account and read all the instructions below you are ready to start filling in the online application form to become an exchange student at AU.

In your self service account you will have access to the form Application form for exchange students, incl. housing application. This is the application form you must fill in in order to apply for admission to Aarhus University.
Please make sure to remember your password to the Self Service account as you will need this later on, if you are accepted.
2. Choose the correct campus
The application procedures vary slightly from campus to campus so please make sure to select the instructions that relate to the campus you wish to apply to. You can find instructions on how to choose the correct campus in the document below under step 3. Choosing your courses.

It may be a good idea to print out the appropriate online application instructions and have them next to you as you go through the process. You may also find it useful to have a printed version of the document below regarding courses.
Please note that the application form for Campus Aarhus, Aarhus University, Main Campus does not include Business or Economics courses. In order to apply to courses at the departments of Business Administration; Business Communication and Economics and Business there must be a bilateral agreement between your home university and the departments, and you must be nominated directly to Business and Social Sciences by your home university.
3. Choosing your courses
Please carefully read the instructions given in this document before selecting courses and filling in the study plan in the online application form. Please do not attempt to choose courses before reading the instructions. Students applying at Business Administration, Business Communication or Economics and Business will receive directions on how to choose courses separately after admission to Aarhus University.
4. Consider housing options
Familiarize yourself with the AU housing service and decide whether you wish to apply for housing through the International Centre or if you prefer to find housing on your own. Students wishing to apply for housing through the International Centre will do so in the application form Application form for exchange students, incl. housing application. No students applying for housing through the International Centre should fill in a separate housing application.
Documents to be attached with your online application
- Official transcript of records from your home university (must be in pdf format and must be in English!)
Your transcript of records is a list of grades from courses you have completed at your home university. Please note that your application cannot be submitted until you have uploaded your transcript of records.
English Language Requirements
As an exchange student at Aarhus University, you come to follow courses and are expected to participate actively in class discussions, group and project work. You must also be able to write academic papers and take written exams.
Therefore, you must have a high level of English proficiency. This means that you are expected to have English language qualifications comparable to the English B level from the Danish upper secondary school (gymnasium). International qualifications comparable to this level are for example:
- TOEFL test results of at least 560 (paper based test) or 83 (internet based test)
- IELTS test with a minimum score of 6.5 points
- C1 level obtained by examination from a CEFR-validated English language course
Since you are expected to have the appropriate English skills, you should not include language documents in your applications. However, Aarhus University reserves the right to take action if students do not comply with the required language skills.
Please notice that applicants for
- Aarhus University School of Engineering (ASE) must have passed a TOEFL test (score 550) or equivalent. Applicants from partner institutions, however, are only asked to provide a document testifying that the applicant has sufficient language skills to pursue an international programme. In case of doubt, ASE reserves the right to test the applicant's English language skills via telephone/Skype
- courses at English need to document their English proficiency according to this info.
Processing your application
We do our best to process your application as fast as possible. However, due to the high number of applicants, it may take a few weeks. You can always check the status of your application by logging into the online Self-service, using the same login and password as when you created and submitted your application form. On your account you will also have access to updated information regarding:
- Your program of study
- Your mentor (not available for students at the Department of Economics and Business, Business Communication Department, Business Administration Department or at AU Herning)
- Your accommodation
After acceptance
Once you have been accepted, AU will send you a welcome e-mail containing the following documents:
- Letter of Enrolment
- Documents needed to submit an application for a residence permit (for non-EU applicants)
The e-mail will be sent to the e-mail address that you have written in your online application. This means that you will receive very important documents in your inbox and therefore, you should pay special attention to having enough space left for this e-mail.
