Language Requirements

As an exchange student at Aarhus University, you come to follow courses in English and are expected to participate actively in class discussions along with group works and projects. You must also be able to write academic papers and take written exams. Therefore, you must have a high level of English proficiency. This means that you are expected to have English language qualifications comparable to the English B level from the Danish upper secondary school (gymnasium). International qualifications comparable to this level are:

  • TOEFL test results of at least 560 (paper based test) or 83 (internet based test)

  • IELTS test with a minimum score of 6.5 points

  • C1 level obtained by examination from a CEFR-validated English language course 

Since you are expected to have the appropriate English skills, most applications should not include language documents. However, Aarhus University reserves the right to take action if students do not comply with the required language skills. 

Please notice that if you apply to be an exchange student within the Faculty of Science and Technology, Faculty of Arts (the English Degree Programme, only) and Faculty of Health, you must include language documentation. Please review the information below.

FACULTY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Applicants at the Faculty of Science and Technology are required to have English language qualifications comparable to CEFR C1, TOEFL IBT 83, IELTS 6.5. English language qualifications can be documented as follows: TOEFL test, IELTS (academic) test, "C1 level" obtained by examination from a CEFR-validated English language course.

Applicants can be exempted from this rule. The exemption apply to the following types:

  • Applicants with a completed English-taught entrance examination ("high school") or an English-taught Bachelor's programme
  • Applicants currently enrolled in an English-taught Bachelor's or Master’s programme
  • Applicants with a Danish/Nordic entrance examination (high school) or International Baccalaureate (high school) with an English level comparable to a Danish B level in English.

FACULTY OF ARTS

English Degree Programme

To study at the English Degree Programme, exchange students must meet the minimum English proficiency requirements established by Aarhus University.

Exchange students nominated by the English Degree Programme partner institutions are exempted from these requirements. If you are an exchange student nominated by an Aarhus University partner institution that is not an English Degree Programme partner institution, you need to document your English proficiency. You can do this in one of two ways:

  • You can meet the minimum English proficiency requirements established by Aarhus University or
  • You can provide the exchange coordinator at the International Centre with a letter from your home university confirming that you have both followed courses taught in English and taken exams conducted in English at university level.

FACULTY OF HEALTH

International Semester in Medicine  

Applicants for the International Semester in Medicine at the Faculty of Health are required to have English language qualifications comparable to CEFR C1, TOEFL IBT 83, IELTS 6.5. English language qualifications can be documented as follows: TOEFL testIELTS (academic) test, "C1 level" obtained by examination from a CEFR-validated English language course.

Applicants can be exempted from this rule. The exemption apply to the following types:

  • Applicants with a completed English-taught entrance examination ("high school") or an English-taught Bachelor's programme
  • Applicants currently enrolled in an English-taught Bachelor's or Master’s programme

Courses in the International Semester in Medicine are the only ones taught in English at the Faculty of Health. Applicants to any other courses are expected to be fluent in Danish.
