Language Requirements

As an exchange student at Aarhus University, your courses will be taught in English and are expected to actively participate  in class discussions as well as study works and projects. You must also be able to write academic papers and take written exams. To do this, you must have a high level of English proficiency, and Aarhus University expects you to have English language qualifications comparable to the English B level from the Danish upper secondary school (gymnasium). International qualifications comparable to this level are:

  • TOEFL test results of at least 560 (paper based test) or 83 (internet based test)

  • IELTS test with a minimum score of 6.5 points

  • C1 level obtained by examination from a CEFR-validated English language course 

Since you are expected to have the necessary English skills, documentation for  language qualification is not required for most applications. However, Aarhus University reserves the right to take action if students do not comply with the required language skills. 

Applications for admission as an exchange student to the following areas must include documentation for language skills:

  • Faculty of Science and Technology
  • Faculty of Arts - courses offered by the English Degree Programme only
  • Faculty of Health

FACULTY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Applicants at the Faculty of Science and Technology are required to have English language qualifications comparable to CEFR C1, TOEFL IBT 83, IELTS 6.5. English language qualifications can be documented as follows: TOEFL test, IELTS (academic) test, "C1 level" obtained by examination from a CEFR-validated English language course.

The following applicants can be exempted from this rule:

  • Applicants who have completed an entrance examination ("high school") or Bachelor's programme where the language of instruction was English
  • Applicants currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master’s programme where the language of instruction is English
  • Applicants who have completed a Danish/Nordic entrance examination (high school) or International Baccalaureate (high school) with an English level comparable to a Danish B level in English.

FACULTY OF ARTS

English Degree Programme

Exchange students wishing to register for courses offered by the English Degree programme must meet AU's minimum English proficiency requirements.

Exchange students enrolled in an English Degree programme at their home university are exempt from documenting that they meet these requirements, provided that their home university has a partnership agreement with the English Degree programme at AU.

Exchange students enrolled in an English Degree programme where the home university does not have a partnership agreement with the English Degree programme at AU must document their English proficiency. This can be done by:

FACULTY OF HEALTH

International Semester in Medicine  

Applicants for the International Semester in Medicine at the Faculty of Health are required to have English language qualifications comparable to CEFR C1, TOEFL IBT 83, IELTS 6.5. English language qualifications can be documented as follows: TOEFL testIELTS (academic) test, "C1 level" obtained by examination from a CEFR-validated English language course.

Applicants can be exempted from this rule. The exemption apply to the following types:

  • Applicants with a completed English-taught entrance examination ("high school") or an English-taught Bachelor's programme
  • Applicants currently enrolled in an English-taught Bachelor's or Master’s programme
  • Applicants with a Danish/Nordic entrance examination (high school) or International Baccalaureate (high school) with an English level comparable to a Danish B level in English.

Courses in the International Semester in Medicine are the only ones taught in English at the Faculty of Health. Applicants to any other courses are expected to be fluent in Danish.
