Housing Application

Applying for housing as tuition-paying student or scholarship recipient via AU Housing

As a new tuition-paying student or scholarship recipient arriving at Aarhus University for the first time, you can use the AU free of charge housing service to find accommodation in Aarhus for the first part of your stay (maximum 12 months.) If you wish to choose this option, please read about the application process below.

Do you need housing in Aarhus, Herning or Emdrup? Check the location of your place of study/work carefully, and write the preferred location on your housing application form.

Applying for accommodation:

  1. Read the terms and conditions of housing.
  2. Be aware of the deadlines: autumn: 1st May, spring: 15th November. We do not handle housing applications received after deadline.
  3. Decide whether you want to use the AU Housing service or if it is better for you to find housing on your own in Aarhus.
  4. If you wish to apply for housing through AU Housing you have to fill in an online housing application. In order to do this, you first have to create an account in the Self-service system and next you can find and fill in the online housing application.
  5. First: Find directions on creating a Self-service account here.
  6. Next: When you have created a Self-service account you can open the Self-service system and fill in your online housing application.
  7. At the housing application form you can request your contract to start on the 1st or 15th of any month. If we can't find an available room for you from the requested date, we will try to find a room for you 14 days before or after the requested date. Check carefully when your eventual intro programme starts and plan according to that. You may have to arrange accommodation at a hostel for the first nights.
  8. At Self-service system you can choose different application forms. Choose this: Erasmus Mundus, Fee-paying Students and Scholarship Recipients.
  9. At the housing application form you will be asked for a contact person. Write: AU Admissions.
  10. Be aware that you can apply for temporary accommodation for a maximum of 12 months. During your temporary accommodation via AU Housing you are expected to find a housing solution for the remaining study period yourself.

What happens next?

  1. If we are able to find you a room, you will receive an email with a housing offer from the housing office when we have allocated you a room. You can expect the email 6-10 weeks before your requested moving in date.
You can find information about most types of housing here. If you can’t find information about the place you have been allocated you can contact us at housing@au.dk.
  2. Make sure that emails from housing@au.dk and housing@adm.au.dk don't end in your spamfilter. Change the settings in your inbox so it allows emails from these two addresses.
  3. When you have received the email, you must confirm acceptance of the offered lease in the Self-service system within 2 days. Please find instructions on how to accept/decline here. In order to accept the offered lease you must pay the first month’s rent via an online credit card payment system, after which the room will be reserved for you. If we do not receive your payment and acceptance within 2 days, your housing offer will be cancelled. Therefore, it is important that you check your emails every day in the period from 6-10 weeks before you requested your lease to start.
  4. If you are offered a room to sublet, you must contact the landlord as soon as possible, sign the leasing contract and transfer the first month’s rent and a security deposit to the landlord’s bank account.  You must arrange how and when to collect the keys with the landlord.
  5. If we can't find you a room, we will contact you 6-8 weeks before your requested moving in date, and inform you about the situation.

Cancellation

  1. If you need to cancel your accommodation, you must contact housing@au.dk immediately. If you cancel your accommodation more than 6 weeks before your leasing contract starts, we will cancel your contract without any costs. In that case we will refund your payment to your bank account. If there is less than six weeks until the start of your leasing contract, we will send you an invoice for 1-2 month’s rent depending on the specific leasing contract. There are no exceptions to this, meaning that the housing office is NOT responsible for eventual delays in your visa-application, withdrawal from your study programme, your eventual health problems or whatever reason for your delay or necessary cancellation, and you will therefore be billed for cancellations made later than 6 weeks before your contract starts for WHATEVER REASON you have to cancel.

Arrival

  1. You might have a lot of questions on practical matters. You can find answers to many of these here.
  2. After arrival, make sure that you sign your leasing contract and hand it in to the Housing Office at the International Centre (unless you have been allocated a room to sublet, in which case you need to send the signed leasing contract to the landlord before arrival.)

Temporary accommodation only

  1. If the duration of your studies exceeds 12 months, you should already from the biginning consider how you will find your next place to live. You find more information here. You might consider signing up at www.studenthousingaarhus.dk as early as possible as rooms are allocated according to your place at their waiting list. Don't forget to consider the problem of furniture, as your room via AU Housing will be furnished, but your next accommodation might not have furniture.
