Housing application process exchange students

Applying for housing through AU's International Housing Office

As a new exchange student to Aarhus University, the International Housing Office offers a housing service. If you wish to apply for housing, please read about the application process below.

Please follow these steps:

  1. Read the terms and conditions of housing and check the deadlines.
  2. Decide whether you want to use the AU housing service or if it is better for you to find housing on your own.
  3. Fill in the online application to become an exchange student at AU, and along with that fill in the housing application form. Go to the online application directions here.
  4. At the housing application form you can request your contract to start 1.7., 15.7., 1.8., 15.8. og 1.9. If a room is not available from the requested date, we will try to find a room for you either 14 days before or after the requested date.
  5. You will recieve an email from the housing office when we have allocated you a room. If you apply for housing in the spring term, you can expect the email around 15.11-15.12., if you apply for housing in the autumn term, you can expect an email around 15.5.-1.7.
  6. When you have received the email, you must confirm acceptance of the offered lease. You will receive information on how to access to the payment system where you will have to pay  the first month's rent. A credit card is required. Your housing reservation will not be confirmed before we have received your payment.
  7. At all leases you will have to pay a deposit of one to three months' rent. More information here.
  8. If you are allocated a room in a residence or a shared facility house, after confirming acceptance of the offer, you do not have to do anything further until you arrive in Aarhus. After arrival you can collect your key and contract at the International Centre.
  9. If you are offered a room to sublet, you must contact the landlord as soon as possible, sign the leasing contract and transfer the first month’s rent and deposit to the landlord’s bank account.  You must arrange how and when to collect the keys with the landlord.
  10. If you need to cancel your accommodation, you must contact housing@adm.au.dk immediately. If you cancel your accommodation more than 6 weeks before your leasing contract starts, we will cancel your contract without any costs. If there is less than six weeks until the start of your leasing contract, we will send you an invoice for 1-2 month’s rent depending on the specific leasing contract. There are no exceptions to this, meaning that the housing office is NOT responsible for eventual delays in your visa-application, withdrawal from your study programme, your eventual health problems or whatever reason for your delay or necesarry cancellation, and you will therefore be billed for cancellations made later than 6 weeks before your contract starts for WHATEVER REASON you have to cancel.
  11. After arrival, make sure that you sign your leasing contract and hand it in to the IC (unless you have been allocated a room to sublet, in which case you need to send the signed leasing contract to the landlord before arrival.)

About housing offered through AU's International Housing Office

Students will be placed in student residences, shared-facilities houses or offered a room to sublet from a private landlord. Read more about these types of housing here. The rooms are scattered around the city and we are not able to guarantee a specific location of your accommodation. In most cases you can expect a maximum of 45 minutes travel time to campus. Rooms will be furnished with basic furniture only: bed, table, study chair, lamp and basic kitchen utensils. Duvets, pillows and bed linen are not provided. Other furniture, equipment and appliances will not be provided.
