Erasmus+ 30-year anniversary

This year we are celebrating the 30-year anniversary of Erasmus+. Since 1987 more than 130,000 Danish pupils, students, teachers and volunteers have been part of the EU educational programme, Erasmus+, which is probably one of the most successful initiatives in EU history.

Also at Aarhus University, many students have enjoyed the programme and in 2016/17 596 of our students went on exchange to Erasmus partners for one or two semesters. This is an increase of 60% compared to 2010, where 372 went on exchange. The number for 2017/18 is expected to be around 650.

“Our students show an increased interest in going abroad, and that is very positive because it is important that they get trained to be citizens of the world. Denmark is a small country, and no matter if our graduates get a job in Denmark or abroad, they will act in an international environment, where they will meet many different nationalities. A semester abroad will give them both linguistic and intercultural competencies, which are highly appreciated in the job market, says Rikke Nielsen, International Director at Aarhus University.

This year the Danish government has had the programme’s effect in Denmark reviewed, and it shows that participants of the programme gained a more positive attitude towards cultural differences and the feeling of being a European. Furthermore, three out of four said that the exchange had increased their competences academically, linguistically and socially.

At Aarhus University the anniversary of Erasmus+ is celebrated from 21 November-23 November 2017 together with partner universities from the Coimbra Group. The Coimbra Group is a group of 39 research-intensive universities in Europe. Besides Aarhus University members include Universiteit Leuven in Belgium, Universität Heidelberg in Germany and University of Edinburgh in the UK.

The programme for the celebration include a special presentation called Erasmus+ meets Let Rethink, with a welcome speech by Prorector Berit Eika. See the full programme of the celebration here
