Aarhus University (AU) is a leading international research institution with more than 38,000 students covering nine scientific areas and a staff of 10,000 employees. Aarhus University is a comprehensive university that gives priority to graduate and PhD level. Today we have 2,000 PhD students with an aim to double this number within the next few years. Similarly master students outnumber bachelor students at AU.

Currently Aarhus University has 4,000 international students.

World-class research-based education

In all degree programmes, research and education are closely related to ensure the depths of the programmes. This means that research is the basis of all activities at AU and that researchers interact actively with students. As evidence of the successful research carried out at AU, Professor Jens Christian Skou was awarded the 1997 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his mapping of the ‘sodium-potassium pump’ and in 2010 Professor Dale T. Mortensen along with Christopher A. Pissarides and Peter A. Diamond were awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics for their analysis of markets with search frictions.

The nine scientific areas of Aarhus University are Humanities, Theology, Educational Science, Social Sciences, Business, Health Sciences, Natural Sciences, Agricultural Sciences and the National Environmental Research Institute.

Campus, city and surroundings

The university is situated in a beautiful, yellow-brick campus in the centre of Aarhus city. The campus includes an attractive park that hosts students’ social activities and events, concerts and is available for all city residents to enjoy. The city of Aarhus is situated on the Eastern cost of Jutland, the large peninsula in Denmark. The city is thus surrounded by cost line and beaches to the east, forests to the south and to the west beautiful hilly area with lakes and streams. The city of Aarhus is home to more than 300,000 people. Aarhus University and Aarhus city is an attractive venue for students as well as for researchers with excellent job opportunities and with educational opportunities for the entire family with an international school and a soon to be established International Baccalaureate within the city limits.

International Centre

International Centre at Aarhus University gives priority to internationalisation and continually strives to professionalise and coordinate the efforts made towards this aim. The internationalisation strategy of Aarhus University 2009-2013 prioritises five core activities; the internationalisation of education, student mobility, internationalisation of research, mobility of researchers and the internationalisation of research-based consultancy.
