Application procedure

Application deadline 1 March for study commencement on 1 September.

Applicants from the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA) and applicants who have a residence permit for Denmark may re-forward additional documents until 1 July. A transcript of exam results from the BA programme up to the time of application must always be included in the application, even if the BA diploma/degree has to be reforwarded after the deadline.

All other applicants have to provide all the documents along with the application form on 1 March owing to the processing of the residence permit to Denmark.

Tuition fees

Please note that appliants with citizenship in countries outside the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EAA) without a permanent residence permit in Denmark are to pay tuition fees.

Financial aid and scholarships

Please note that Aarhus University is unable to offer financial support to foreign students, which means that you must have sufficient financial means to cover your stay in Denmark or apply to your own national authorities for a study grant.

However, Aarhus University administers a few scholarships for non-EU/EEA students awarded by the Danish government. Students cannot apply for a scholarship , but the best qualified applicants can be nominated for one. Partly scholarships may be awarded.

All EU/EEA citizens must be able to support themselves financially.

In general, our university does not offer teaching assistantship to foreign students.

Academic requirements

Access to the Master’s Programme in European Studies at Aarhus University requires successful completion of a relevant BA degree within Humanities or Social Sciences (e.g. Cultural Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Linguistics, History). All applicants must briefly account for the relevance of their BA degree in relation to the MA programme in ES.

Only students who fulfil these requirements should apply.

General English language requirements ('English B level')

According to the Danish Ministry of Science's Order no 32 on Admission to Danish Universities, all applicants with non-Danish examinations to Master's programmes taught in English must document English language qualifications comparable to an 'English B level' in the Danish upper secondary school ('high school') .

English language qualifications comparable to an 'English B level' in Denmark can be documented as follows:

  • TOEFL test results of at least 560 (paper-based), or 220 (computer-based test) or 83 (internet-based test)
The Aarhus University TOEFL code is 8935
  • IELTS test with a minimum score of 6.5 points
  • Cambridge/Oxford Certificate/Test in Advanced English
  • "C1 level" obtained by examination from a CEFR -validated English language course.
  • English-taught entrance examination (upper secondary school/high school) or Bachelor’s degree
  • English language qualifications obtained through at least 210 hours of English lessons (1 hour = 60 minutes) in a non-Danish entrance examination. You must ask your upper secondary school/high school to provide documentation for the total number of English lessons/hours you have received during your final three upper secondary/high school years. You are required to enclose a copy of your upper secondary/high school certificate, including course and examination descriptions of your English language course.

Selection criteria

European Studies only admit a limited number of students each year (40 in 2009), so fulfilling the minimum requirements does not in itself guarantee admission to the programme. In selecting between the qualified applicants, the admission board focuses on the following points:

  • Grade point average
  • Duration of BA studies

All applications are evaluated individually by the admission board at the Department of European Studies.

Documentation

The following documents have to be submitted with the application. If the documents are not enclosed, the University cannot process your application. The documents must be in English, German, French, Danish, Swedish or Norwegian. Translations of documents into one of the above-mentioned languages must always be made by an authorized translator:

  • Certified copies of diplomas showing examination subjects and results for each examination (a diploma without specific examination results is not sufficient).
  • A brief statement explaining the relevance of the BA in relation to the MA programme in European Studies.
  • Certified copy of your IELTS test, certified documentation of ’B-niveau’ in English from a Danish entrance examination, documentation of English taught BA degree or other documentation of your Academic English language proficiency
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Documentation of citizenship or (e.g. a copy of your passport) and your permanent residence permit in Denmark (if applicable).
  • Other relevant documents

Important! Aarhus University only accepts certified copies! Certified copies require original stamps and signatures as proof of their authenticity – alternatively, you may ask two persons who are not related to you to sign the back of the copy, including their name, address and birth date, thereby confirming that the copy is in conformity with the original.

New times at au.dk/en

The university’s website is being redesigned. The design and content will therefore change, and you may experience for a while that old and new sections are mixed together, and that the content is not in its usual place.

We hope that the new website will make up for any inconvenience, and that you will enjoy greater coherence throughout and find the website simpler to use.

Why are we making a mess?

In the time ahead, you will notice a mixture of old and new designs in the pages on the website.

In spring 2011, Aarhus University’s nine main academic areas were reduced to four, and the fifty-five departments became twenty-six. This was to unify the organisation and to strengthen the university’s interdisciplinary approach. We are now following suit by restructuring the entire website to ensure more coherence in the content and design.

Such an exercise takes time – and we hope you will bear with us!

Take a short cut

Under the HOT KEY at the top right, you can find links to the most frequently used content on the website, as well as the two new universes for staff and students.

Where can I find it?

Use the new mega dropdowns to get an overview of the website’s content. They open when you run your mouse over the navigation at the top.
