Interesting case competition for Indian biotech students

In collaboration with the Henning Holck-Larsen Foundation and Novozymes, Aarhus University has organised a case competition that offers a very talented MSc student from India the opportunity to win a full scholarship covering both tuition fees and living expenses at Aarhus University for one semester.

Who is eligible to participate?

Indian MSc students who are currently enrolled in a MSc programme in the field of biotechnology defined as "the study of advanced technological applications that use biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for industrial or scientific use, excluding technology which is exclusively or mainly for pharmaceutical applications".

Case description:

The Indian economy is expanding rapidly, with GDP growth set to surpass that of China in 2015. A significant expansion of the middle class, together with India’s general population growth, greatly increases demand for goods such as meat, cars, air-conditioning units etc., which in turn causes increases in chemical pollution and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from increased energy production.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has stated that GHG emissions from human activities are the main cause of climate change, and that significant changes in consumption and production patterns need to take place in order to decrease emissions and keep global temperature increase below 2 degrees Celsius. This calls for a different approach to thinking energy and production of goods to reduce environmental impact both locally and globally.

Question: How can we develop solutions that leverage biological methods to decrease the environmental impact of the growing demand for energy and goods in Indian society?
