Associate Professor of Global Studies
The Department of Culture and Society at the Faculty of Arts at Aarhus University invites applications for the position of associate professor of Global Studies. The position is available from 1 August 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The position
We are particularly interested in a candidate with a strong research and teaching profile in global studies and the social and cultural dimensions of globalization.
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and teaching courses within the MA programme of International Studies; please see this webpage. While based in the International Studies programme, the successful candidate will also be expected to teach and develop activities on a wider departmental level.
Further tasks involve supporting the International Studies programme’s outreach strategy, especially regarding methodologies of how to study the global and regarding the establishment of contacts and collaborations with international universities to help build double-degrees, co-tutelles, study exchanges, and international PhD courses. The successful candidate is expected to strengthen the global studies profile of the Department of Culture and Society through international research as well as through actively engaging in the further internationalization of the study programme.
We are seeking a dedicated candidate who will contribute to a broad spectrum of Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of education, teaching, talent development and knowledge exchange.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications in a field relevant to the described research area. Applicants must have scholarly qualifications at an international level and documented teaching qualifications equivalent to those acquired in an assistant professorship.
• A background in sociology or similar disciplines
• Proven experience within international research projects related to global studies
• A theoretical background in theories of global modernity that supports the theoretical focus of the International Studies programme
• Prior experience with teaching in an international and interdisciplinary classroom
• Mastery of academic English in the classroom, as the candidate will be expected to teach courses in English
• Interest in interdisciplinary research cooperation
• The ability to initiate and participate in collaborative projects with other research and teaching programmes at Aarhus University and in international contexts
• Interest in the application of innovative teaching methods, such as collaborative student involvement
• Dedication to developing PhD courses and participation in doctoral supervision courses
• Interest in knowledge exchange.

The International Studies programme at Aarhus University
International Studies at Aarhus University is a multi-disciplinary, English-taught Master’s Degree. In the last years it has grown to be one of the largest English-taught MA programmes within the Faculty of Arts. It attracts students globally. The appointee will join a dynamic programme and collaborate with international colleagues and students in an interdisciplinary environment. The research profiles of European Studies and International Studies reflect the multidisciplinary approach. Among the academic staff are scholars with backgrounds in anthropology, history, political science and sociology, whose research spans topics such as democracy, cultural politics of the EU, globalisation, identities, institutions, art, gender, legitimacy, media, minorities, politics and economics, transnational networks and organisations, educational research and pop culture. The Department of Culture and Society
The focus of the teaching and research activities of the Department of Culture and Society is the interplay of culture and society in time and space:
• From the classical research fields of theology and the humanities to applied social research through history
• Form the earliest times to issues of topical interest
• Form familiar Danish forms of culture to other and very different worlds
• From local issues to global challenges
The department encompasses a range of strong research and degree programmes, which in dialogue with each other and with society work to develop innovative ways to solve issues of topical or perennial interest. The department’s goal is to produce compelling research with international resonance and visibility, as well as to offer high-quality undergraduate and post-graduate study programmes. We also work to engage Danish society in a fruitful exchange of knowledge. We offer an informal challenging working environment. Participation in the daily life of the programme is a high priority, and we emphasize the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and to our students.

Faculty of Arts
The Faculty of Arts combines educational, theological and humanistic knowledge in order to strengthen Aarhus University’s efforts in the areas of research, researcher talent development, knowledge exchange and education. The faculty is the result of a fusion of the former main academic areas: the Faculty of Humanities, the faculty of Theology and the Danish School of Education.
