The aim of this position is to strengthen the focus on the theory and methodology of aesthetics and culture with regard to the interplay of cultural, aesthetic and digital dimensions of society in a primarily contemporary perspective.

We are seeking an innovative and dedicated applicant who will contribute to Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of research, teaching and supervision, talent development and knowledge exchange. The successful applicant is expected to contribute actively to the academic and collegial activities relating to the department’s degree programmes.

The Aesthetics and Culture degree programmes conducted by the department focus on art and culture in modern society in a broad sense. Based on a broad conception of aesthetics, the focus is placed on the analysis of art and aesthetic phenomena and the roles they play in culture in a contemporary but historically reflected perspective. The programmes incorporate and develop theories and approaches which transcend the boundaries of individual art forms and traditional research fields.

The research environment
The department’s researchers are active in various national and international research collaborations within the programme’s central fields: theories of aesthetics and culture as well as aesthetic and cultural analysis. Current research interests include the mechanisms and consequences of aestheticisation as well as questions of mediality and intermediality, audio culture, the democratic public sphere, participatory culture, and the concept of contemporaneity. The central degree programmes offered are the BA and MA in Aesthetics and Culture, and the supplementary subject in Aesthetic Communication.

Work environment
If the successful applicant does not speak Danish, he or she will be required to acquire sufficient Danish to participate fully in the activities of the School of Communication and Culture within two years of commencing the appointment.

Active participation in the daily life of the department is a high priority, and we emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students. In order to maintain and develop the department’s excellent teaching and research environment, the successful applicant is expected to be present at the department on a daily basis, which will contribute to the School of Communication and Culture’s goal of establishing one of the best research environments in the Nordic countries.

The Department of Art History, Aesthetics & Culture and Museology, the School of Communication and Culture, and Aarhus University respect the balance between work and private life and strive to create a work environment in which that balance can be maintained.

The Faculty of Arts
