Assistant Professor (adjunkt) in cognitive semiotics and cognitive science 888558

Applications are invited for the position of assistant professor (adjunkt) in cognitive semiotics and cognitive science with a specialisation in cognition and communication at the School of Communication and Culture.

The assistant professorship is a full-time, three-year position. Subject to the availability of funding, an associate professorship in the same field will be announced in open competition at the end of the three-year term. The appointment begins on 1 August 2017, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position
A position as assistant professor includes tasks and responsibilities in all of Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of research, teaching, talent development and knowledge exchange.
The position is affiliated with the Department of Linguistics, Cognitive Science and Semiotics within the School of Communication and Culture. It involves research, teaching and supervision duties in courses on all the department’s programmes, especially the programmes in cognitive semiotics and cognitive science.

Research
 

We are looking for a dedicated scholar who has research and teaching experience related to cognitive aspects of language, text and aesthetics. The successful candidate must demonstrate skills in empirical, experimental and cross-disciplinary research. Key criteria of the assessment will be the quality of the research output, which is expected to meet international standards.

Teaching
The position includes teaching courses at Master’s level on the programme in cognitive semiotics and on the BSc programme in cognitive science. These courses include text linguistics, cognitive semantics, research methods and an introduction to cognitive science. The position also includes teaching interdisciplinary courses for students from across the School of Communication and Culture and the Faculty of Arts, and occasionally courses in linguistics. Additionally, the position includes individual and group supervision.

The person appointed to the post will be obliged to complete a course in university teaching especially designed for assistant professors.

Knowledge exchange
The successful applicant will be expected to share knowledge with various sectors of society outside of the university, and to be active in the general public debate in areas related to the position.

Formal qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent qualifications in cognitive semiotics, linguistics, cognitive science or another relevant field.

Applicants must be able to document
• Qualifications in empirical, experimental and cross-disciplinary research, including the use of quantitative methods.
• Relevant teaching experience as expected in someone with a PhD in a relevant area of study.

Additional assessment criteria
• Experience of international research cooperation in the area of the position, including experience of organising academic conferences and meetings.

• The ability to initiate and participate in collaborative projects with other research and teaching programmes at Aarhus University and in international contexts. 

• The successful application of innovative teaching methods at university level.

• Professional command of English, both spoken and written.
• Experience of and/or plans for attracting external research funding.

The application must be submitted in English.

All teaching on the cognitive semiotics degree programme is in English. If the successful applicant does not speak Danish, he/she will be required to learn sufficient Danish within two years of commencing the appointment to participate fully in the activities of the School of Communication and Culture. Participation in the daily life of the department is a high priority, and we emphasise the importance of good working relationships both among colleagues and with our students.
