Postdoc position in plant pathology and fungicide resistance 907921

Aarhus University, Science and Technology, Department of Agroecology in Flakkebjerg, invites applications for a three year postdoctoral position, starting 1 November 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The research section
The successful candidates will be part of the Crop Health Section, where we conduct research on various aspects of crop health including the interaction between plant pathogens, control measures and plants as a part of disease management in arable crops.

Key aspects of our plant pathology research are: disease management involves the use of molecular and classical diagnostics in order to understand epidemiology and ecology of plant pathogens, with the overall aim of preventing and managing plant diseases in agriculture. The aim is to ensure sustainable crop protection without compromising yield as well as minimizing the use of pesticides and any adverse impacts on the environment. To meet these goals an improved knowledge in two key areas are essential: 1) disease forecasting as a mean of early warning combined with weather data constituting the basis for decisions on whether to spray or not and 2) fungicide resistance being essential in order to clarify the risk of resistance and actual changes in the susceptibility of target organisms. The activities of the section span from basic to applied research with the aim to ensure and optimise sustainable control strategies and yields.

The research area
Problems related to the spread of plant pathogens including improved risk assessments and fungicide resistant pathogens have long been recognized as an important area aiming at sustainable control of plant pathogens. Pattern of pathogen spread measured by airsampling should be linked to climatic conditions and other enviromental factors in order to improve the prediction value of these systems. In previous work we identified means of minimizing selection for resistance by adjusting the number of treatments and product choice. Further elaboration on novel strategies also involving new mode of actions and biological control agensts is important to provide guidance to the farming community on optimal disease management strategies considering risk assessment as well as ways of counter acting the development of resistance.

The Project “EURO- RES”
The candidate will be associated to the project “EURO-RES”, a C-IPM project, and other ongoing project in the area of disease management. The objective of the EURO-RES project is to secure sustainable control of Septoria tritici blotch through appropriate anti resistance strategies involving not only fungicides but also cultivar resistance, sowing dates and biological control agents in a multi-faceted sustainable disease management strategy. The project is carried out in collaboration with other international partners in Europe.

Other research topics include the use of air sampling of plant disease spores as a key to early disease warning for wind spread diseases. Initiatives have been taken in this area but making these investigation more applicable and user friendly will require further optimization of the methods.

Qualifications and specific competences
We seek an outgoing person with research experience in the area of plant pathology. The position is open for persons, who hold a PhD degree in agronomy, biology or environmental science. Strong expertise in handling of plant pathogens, screening for fungicide resistance using both bioassays and molecular techniques are required. Strong background in data analysis and statistics and experiences with setting up and running both field- and green-house experiments is considered an advantage. Furthermore good skills in reading, writing and speaking English are required. The successful candidates must have good collaborative skills in relation to technicians, students, scientists and project partners and possess thorough methodical skills.

Application procedure
Short-listing is used. This means that after the deadline for applications and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
