PhD fellowship: The Young Resident and the Old Patient in EmergencyMedicine: Communication, Decision-Making, and Learning 912431

A funded 3-year PhD fellowship is available on the role of simulation-based training of interprofessional teams in emergency care and continuing education.
Supervisors will be: Associate Professor Peter Musaeus, Centre for Health Sciences Education, Aarhus University, Denmark (main supervisor) and Clinical Associate Pro-fessor Charlotte Paltved, Medical Director at Corporate HR MidtSim, the Central Re-gion of Denmark (co-supervisor).

Project summary
Emergency Departments are increasingly facing an unprecedented influx of older pa-tients because of an aging population. More than half of these older patients are likely to be frail and vulnerable due to physical and mental disabilities, which makes shared decision making a challenge. There is a quality gap between emergency care and the needs of older adults. Furthermore, implementation of patient-centered research in the emergency care setting has been limited.
The aim of the project is to provide substantial and novel insight into how to assess the training needs for effective interprofessional teamwork in geriatric emergency medi-cine. We are looking for one suitable PhD-candidate who can prepare a case study of geriatric emergency medical team communication and patient-centredness in conjunc-tion with an assessment of residents’ training needs. Qualitative or mixed-methods re-search techniques should be applied such as interviews, observations, survey, or visu-alization methodologies (diagramming etc.). At the final stage, the project will include a (limited in scale) intervention study aimed at producing fundamental and novel in-sights into how residents should cooperate and communicate with geriatric patients in interprofessional teams to improve patient-centered care and shared decision-making. The intervention study could draw from an ethnographic study of emergency practice and testing hypotheses in the simulation-training facility.

The PhD program includes PhD courses (in total app. ½ year), writing scientific arti-cles and the PhD thesis, teaching and disseminating your research, active participation in scientific meetings etc. Further details on the PhD program can be found here: http://talent.au.dk/phd/health/phdstudystructure/.
