A 2 year postdoc position in social-ecological system simulation 925737

The Department of Bioscience at Aarhus University invites applications for a 2 (+2, subject to expected funding) years postdoc position in social-ecological system simulation. The position is available as soon as possible.

The research area:
Developing predictive tools for landscape management depends on linking social and ecological components of a system effectively. Social-ecological system (SES) simulations are new tools, but are essential since the impact of management is determined by processes acting in local context, and resulting in feedback situations. These relationships can be captured in detailed simulations and used to explore management strategies as well as to understand causal mechanisms for observed real world phenomena. These simulations therefore have a role in both applied and theoretical studies.

The research tasks:
The main task will be to undertake research and development using the Animal Landscape and Man Simulation System (ALMaSS) applied to the main ALMaSS activity areas; these being simulation in support of management of animal populations (focal species here are currently honey bees, wild bees, geese and hare), agroecosystems policy and management (including human decision making behaviour), and regulatory environmental risk assessment. The successful candidate should support technical development and application of social-ecological system simulation methodologies as part of the ALMaSS team, and develop independent research in one of the above main activity areas. A key activity will be application of SES simulation and there must be a strong focus on subsequent scientific publication. The candidate will also be welcome to participate in other research activities (existing data or new projects) in the local research environment.

The applicant is expected to have the scientific background (PhD level) in a scientific discipline, a strong background in simulation modelling and/or programming. Experience of C++, R and GIS is an advantage, as is a demonstrated research interest in one or more of the main ALMaSS activity areas. Ability to work and communicate well as part of a team is essential.

Place of work: Wildlife Ecology Section at the Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University, Grenåvej 12, Kalø, DK-8410 Rønde (Jutland), Denmark

Application procedure
Short-listing is used. This means that after the deadline for applications and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.
