Assistant or Associate Professorship in the Study of Religion 928931

The School of Culture and Society, Aarhus University, invites applications for a three-year position as assistant or associate professor within the Department of the Study of Religion with a special focus on the study of Islam. The position is available from 1 January 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position
The Department of the Study of Religion at Aarhus University has a major focus on the study of Islam, as indicated by the study programme in Arab and Islamic Studies. The position is offered with a view to attracting a talented person who is expected to play a key role in the continued creation of internationally recognised research areas within the study of Islam at the Department of the Study of Religion and in the Arab and Islamic Studies programme, which is part of the Department of the Study of Religion. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to core activities at the School of Culture and Society in general and the Department of the Study of Religion in particular in the following areas: research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange.

Research
The Department of the Study of Religion at Aarhus University has a pronounced and significant international profile and a strong research network. The successful applicant will be expected to take part in developing the research programme in the study of religion with a deep understanding of Islam in past and contemporary societies, and to contribute to research initiatives in terms of new research projects with internal and external partners and external research funding. Research experience in formative, classical or medieval Islam will be an advantage.

The successful applicant will be expected to take part in the daily activities of the department.

Education

Applicants should be able to teach courses on all periods of Islam and on modern Arab and Islamic societies. Applicants should be prepared to teach and contribute to developing courses, learning and supervision at all levels of both the Arab and Islamic studies programme and relevant parts of the programme in the study of religion (BA and MA, plus PhD level if an associate professor is appointed), and will be expected to have teaching experience at university level. Applicants must also be able to collaborate on teaching in connection with other degree programmes offered by the School of Culture and Society.

If an assistant professor is appointed, the person concerned will be obliged to complete a course in university teaching devised especially for assistant professors.

Talent development
If an associate professor is appointed, the successful applicant will be expected to identify the development potential of junior researchers and to contribute to talent development and the teaching and development of PhD courses.

Knowledge exchange

It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance in cooperation with civil society actors or the public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants should document any prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications in the study of religion or related fields. Applicants for the assistant professorship must also have teaching experience corresponding at least to the experience gained during a PhD degree programme.

Applicants must also document:
•    Knowledge of formative, classical or medieval Islam.
•    Knowledge of contemporary and lived Islam and of modern Arab and Islamic societies and their history and culture.
•    The ability to work in Quranic and classical Arabic as well as Modern Standard Arabic.
•    Knowledge of the study of religion, including theoretical and methodological perspectives.
•    A relevant and internationally oriented publication profile.
•    Experience of or interest in participation in national and international research networks.
•    Experience of or interest in communication and knowledge exchange.
•    Experience of interdisciplinary collaboration as well as interdisciplinary research.
•    Experience of or potential for obtaining external research funding.
•    Experience of or interest in interdisciplinary teaching including innovative teaching methods.
•    Experience of or interest in supervising student projects and interest in research talent development.

Applicants for the assistant professorship must be able to document experience of or interest in the points mentioned above at least at PhD level. Applicants for the associate professorship must be able to document competences corresponding to the completion of an assistant professorship.

Applicants must be able to teach and communicate in Danish at university level. If the successful applicant is not fluent in Danish, he or she will be expected to learn Danish within a period of approximately two years.

Research environment
The assistant/associate professor will be part of a strong international research environment at the department and will be expected to contribute to ongoing research activities through participation in meetings, seminars, etc., and to stimulate the development of new research projects at all levels within the field of the study of religion. The Department of the Study of Religion is one of the largest research environments in the world in this field, including strong research competences in Islamic studies, the history of religion, contemporary religion, cognition and experimental studies. The environment is interdisciplinary in its organisation and working methods, and the programme’s researchers are involved in a wide range of research projects with colleagues from other fields, such as biblical studies and church history within theology, anthropology and political science within Arab and Islamic studies, the humanities in general, the social sciences and the natural sciences.

The School of Culture and Society
At the School of Culture and Society the object of research and teaching is the interplay between culture and society in time and space:

-  From the traditional disciplines of the humanities and theology to applied social research
-  From Antiquity to the issues facing contemporary societies
-  From familiar Danish cultural forms to other very different worlds
