Postdoctoral/Assistant Professor Position - 949961

The Department of Political Science, Aarhus University in Denmark invites applications for one postdoctoral position or assistant professorship in connection with the research project Political Parties’ Institutional Legitimacy (PartyLeg).

The position is fixed-term of either two years with limited teaching obligations (postdoctoral researcher) or three years with more extensive teaching obligations (assistant professor). The final form of the position will be decided by the head of department taking the teaching demand of the department and the qualifications of the candidate into account. The position is co-financed by Aarhus University Research Foundation and Aarhus University.

The position is located at the Department of Political Science, Aarhus University. Successful candidates are expected to start by 15th March 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

PartyLeg

PartyLeg investigates political parties’ institutional legitimacy and its sources in Western Europe. In a time when populism is on the rise and established political parties are struggling to connect to citizens, parties seem to lack perceived institutional legitimacy, i.e. the correspondence of citizens’ norms and expectations with party behaviour. The project develops the concept of party legitimacy and studies its determinants through a combination of party- and individual-level data. It combines research on party representation and organisation with public opinion in seven West European countries (Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom).

The research project is financed by Aarhus University Research Foundation (AUFF) for the period January 2018 to December 2020 and led by Associate Professor Ann-Kristin Kölln.

The position offers excellent opportunities to develop research questions and quantitative research skills within the field of party politics, political representation, and political behaviour.

Your qualifications

The successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of the project, including survey questionnaire design and data collection. Applicants are expected to hold (or be close to completing) a PhD in political science or a related social science field. In addition to interest in conducting independent and collaborative research within the focus area of PartyLeg, applicants must demonstrate the ability to conduct state-of-the-art research within the fields of party politics and political behaviour.
