Postdoctoral position in Marine Micropalaeontology and Palaeoceanography 950659

The Centre for Past Climate Studies at the Department of Geoscience at Aarhus University, Denmark, invites applications for a position in marine micropalaeontology and palaeoceanography at the postdoctoral level.

The successful candidate will be part of a research group studying late Quaternary palaeoclimate and palaeoceanography of the larger North Atlantic region. He/she will partake in an international, multidisciplinary team.

The position is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark and has a fixed term of 2 years, starting as soon as possible.

Job description
The postdoctoral project will focus on investigating changes in sea ice and surface ocean circulation off Greenland through the Holocene. The overall purpose of this research project is to improve our basic understanding of the processes determining sea-ice cover and its variability, which is needed for a better prediction of the fate of Arctic sea ice in a warmer world. The main tools of the postdoc project will be the investigation of marine sediment cores using a combination of micropalaeontological (e.g., diatoms or dinoflagellates) and sedimentological proxies aided by geochemical (e.g., XRF core scanning data, stable isotopes, CaCO3, TOC etc.) analyses in a multi-proxy study.

The postdoctoral project is part of a larger research project, G-ICE, which has the purpose of testing the linkage of sea-ice variability to ocean and atmospheric circulation.

The postdoc will thus contribute to the objectives of G-ICE:

1.    Define the baseline of Greenland sea-ice cover under pre-industrial climatic conditions.
2.    Document the natural variability of sea ice around Greenland through time, at decadal to millennial scales beyond the instrumental period.
3.    Identify natural trends, range of variations and extremes conditions, and test their relation to e.g. solar forcing, precipitation, bathymetry, ice-ocean heat exchange, and volcanic activity.
4.    Evaluate the short- and long-term response of sea-ice cover and ocean circulation to Greenland ice-sheet melt.
5.    Develop and test scenarios of sea ice and ocean conditions under a future “warm climate” from intervals marked by climate optima, such as the mid-Holocene and the medieval warm period.

Participation in supervision of B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. students and some classroom teaching is also expected.

Qualifications
The successful applicant will have a PhD in geoscience or related fields. Candidates should preferably have knowledge on Quaternary marine micropaleontology (especially diatoms or dinoflagellates), although specialists in other techniques/proxies are also invited to apply. Experience in multi-proxy studies, sea ice variability and/or numerical/statistical data treatment will be considered favourably. Excellent oral and written English skills are a requirement.

Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
