The Department of Agroecology at Aarhus University is looking for a dedicated and responsible professor within the area of soil physics. The position is available from March 1, 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position aim to strengthen ongoing activities at the department’s Soil Physics and Hydropedology Section. The section is dedicated to the research of fundamental soil functions and threats to the soil resource such as pollution, erosion, compaction or declining soil organic matter. A challenge for modern intensive agriculture is to reduce its nutrient emissions and the ensuing adverse impact on the aquatic environment while simultaneously maintaining or increasing agricultural production. In the future, the agricultural sector will have to comply with higher regulatory standards that involve targeted and emission-based approaches to mitigating nutrient losses from soil to water. This calls for an expanded research effort into both fundamental process understanding and effective mitigation options. With our strong expertise in fundamental and applied soil physics, soil hydrology, nutrient transport in landscapes and digital soil mapping we are well placed to address this challenge, but we wish to expand our team.

The  qualified candidates are specialized in one or more of the topics within the soil research area such as: soil structure; transport and fate of water, contaminants, energy, solutes, and particulates; gaseous phase transport; soil hydrophobicity; soil sensor development; soil variability; soil management; soil ecosystem services and resilience; depleted soils and artic soils.

The candidate must furthermore be able to work cross-disciplinarily in teams collaborating with researchers and highly professional technical staff across the department. The new staff member is expected to contribute to research and teaching, and to providing research-based policy advice and consultancy to authorities. Further, the position involves responsibility for attracting highly competitive national and international funding, industry collaboration as well as taking a huge responsibility within the PhD area as both supervisor and as head of the AGRO PhD programme.
Successful candidates 
You are expected to: 
• be responsible for the development of the research area and implementation of basic and applied research 
• establish synergies between your own research and other related research activities to securethe needed interdisciplinary approaches 
• maintain a strong national and international network of contacts with leading research groups, as well as pursuing industrial contacts within the agro industry 
• support the development of comprehensive research-based teaching activities and participate in assessments of students at Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD levels 
• be responsible for effective knowledge exchange with society, industry and the Danish Government
• successfully attract external research grants from industry, national and international sources 
• develop and contribute to relevant educational courses at the PhD, Master’s and Bachelor’s  level 
• participate in MSc, PhD and post-doctoral training and be responsible for the educational guidance of assistant professors/postdocs.
• Mentor post docs and young researcher in attracting competitive funding

The following professional and personal qualifications are required: 
• PhD degree or equivalent qualifications within soil sciences
• Documented experience as an international research leader in relation to Soil physicochemical behaviour and functionality 
• Documented research qualifications at professorship level
• Experience in communication of research in a wide context 
• Ability to strengthen national and international cooperation within the research area 
• Documented ability to attract research funding 
• Documented experience with supervision of postdocs, PhD and MSc students 
• Documented teaching experience
• Documented leadership skills in relation to international collaboration and development of interdisciplinary research teams
The Department of Agroecology 
The Department of Agroecology is part of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Aarhus University and includes research across agroecology, that is to say the interaction between plants, animals, humans and the environment within agroecosystems for the production of food, feed, energy and biobased products. We contribute to sustainable production and growth via excellent research, advice and teaching. The Department currently employs approx. 60 full time scientific staff, 100 PhD students and Postdocs, and approx. 100 technical/administrative staff. Furthermore, we have a number of students and guests each year contributing to an international research environment.
The Department works in teams and therefore self-leadership, clear and open communication, success in mentoring, supervising and teaching are important qualities needed to be successful in the Department. The Department is responsible for a Bachelor’s programme Agrobiology, and Master’s programme in AgroEnvironmental Management, taught at AU, Denmark. In addition, Department staff contribute to several other key interdisciplinary educations. Staff also teach on a number of other educations offered at other Universities in Denmark and China.

Place of Work and area of Employment / Conditions of Appointment 
The place of work is Blichers Allé 20, DK-8830 Tjele, Denmark and the area of employment is Aarhus University with related departments. 

The position is open for appointment from 01/03 2018. Individual negotiations will take place based on acknowledgement that senior research leaders may have existing commitments and need to relocate to Denmark.

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.

Formalities and salary range
Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
