The Department of Educational Sociology at the Danish School of Education at Aarhus University invites applications for an assistant/associate professorship in learning, management and organisation with a special focus on organisation and leadership in primary and lower-secondary schools (Folkeskolen) and daycare centres (dagtilbud).

The assistant professorship is a full-time, three-year training position which begins on 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The associate professorship is a permanent position which begins on 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position is based at DPU campus Aarhus. It is important that the successful applicant takes part in the daily activities of the department, including both teaching and supervising. Since the department is situated in both Aarhus and Copenhagen, the successful applicant should expect some travel activity between Aarhus and Copenhagen.

The position
The position in learning, management and organisation focuses in particular on the management and organisation of primary and lower-secondary education, focusing on learning processes in children, young people and staff, for example in professional learning communities. The applicant is expected to be able to use both quantitative and qualitative methods. Emphasis is placed on creating research results that are relevant for schools and daycare centres as well as for professional stakeholders, especially school leaders and daycare managers.

The learning, management and organisation programme is part of the Master’s degree programme in educational sociology, which combines elements from sociology and educational theory with empirical studies of leadership in educational institutions. The Department of Educational Sociology is strongly committed to the attraction of national and international external funding, and the successful applicant should also expect to take part in research activities in collaboration with the National Centre for School Research (NCS).

Research
We are looking for a candidate with a strong research profile in the leadership of schools and daycare centres and a focus on learning processes in children, young people and staff. The successful applicant will be expected to develop new research projects with immediate relevance for this area of interest.

Teaching
The successful applicant must be prepared to teach educational leadership within a school and daycare context at all levels of the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in educational science and the Master’s degree programme in educational sociology.

The person appointed to the post will be expected to contribute to the department’s academic environment, including collaboration with other relevant academic programmes. Participation in the daily life of the department is a high priority, and we emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students.

The assistant professor will be obliged to complete a course in university teaching designed especially for assistant professors.

Talent development
If an assistant professor is appointed he/she will be expected to develop his or her supervision capabilities at MA level.
If an associate professor is appointed he/shewill be expected to contribute to talent development within the fields of educational sociology with a focus on leadership theory and practice and organisational theories with a focus on learning. He/she will be expected to supervise PhD students as well as teaching and developing PhD courses.

Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance in research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with civil society actors or the public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants should document any prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange.

Qualifications (assistant professor)
The successful applicant for the assistant professorship must have a PhD or the equivalent in educational sociology, sociology or related fields in social science, and must be able to document:
• A strong research profile in the leadership of schools and daycare centres with a focus on learning processes in children, young people and staff
• Experience of both quantitative and qualitative methods
• An internationally oriented research profile
• A relevant and internationally oriented publication profile
• Experience of or interest in participation in national and international research networks
• Experience of or interest in communication and knowledge exchange
• Experience of interdisciplinary collaboration as well as interdisciplinary research
• Experience of or potential for obtaining external research funding
• Experience of or interest in interdisciplinary teaching, including innovative teaching methods
• Teaching qualifications which are relevant in relation to the Master’s degree programme in educational sociology
• Mastery of academic English in the classroom, as the successful applicant will be expected to teach courses in English
• Experience of or interest in supervising student projects and interest in researcher talent development.

Qualifications (associate professor)
The successful applicant for the associate professorship must have a PhD or the equivalent in educational sociology, sociology or related fields in social science as well as research and teaching qualifications equivalent to those acquired in an assistant professorship, and must also be able to document:

• A strong research profile in the leadership of schools and daycare centres with a focus on learning processes in children, young people and staff
• Experience of both quantitative and qualitative methods
• An internationally oriented research profile
• A strong, relevant international publication profile
• Participation in national and international research networks
• Experience of participation in collective research projects
• Teaching experience in areas of relevance to educational sociology, interdisciplinary teaching experience including innovative teaching methods, and mastery of academic English in the classroom
• Proficiency in languages relevant to the area of research
• Experience of interdisciplinary cooperation
• Experience of supervising student projects and an interest in researcher talent development.

The applicant must be able to teach and publish in English. If the successful applicant cannot speak Danish, she/he will be required to learn Danish within a period of approximately two years.
