The Danish School of Education (DPU), Faculty of Arts at Aarhus University invites applications for an assistant or associate professorship in the anthropology of organisations 953247

The Department of Educational Anthropology at the Danish School of Education at Aarhus University invites applications for an assistant/associate professorship in the anthropology of organisations and technology with a focus on emerging technology and cultural learning processes.

The assistant professorship is a full-time, three-year training position which begins on 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The associate professorship is a permanent position which begins on 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position is based at DPU campus Aarhus. It is important that the successful applicant takes part in the daily activities of the department, including both teaching and supervising. Since the department is situated in both Aarhus and Copenhagen, the successful applicant should expect some travel activity between Aarhus and Copenhagen.

The position
The anthropology of organisations and technology should be understood in broad terms and may encompass the study of organising and/or the use of technology in private companies, public organisations and beyond. The successful applicant must have a background in anthropology or another relevant field in the social sciences or humanities, as well as strong academic experience within the ethnographic exploration of organisations, everyday work practices and technology, and must be willing to participate in consolidating and expanding the field in terms of both teaching and research.

The Department of Educational Anthropology is an internationally oriented department in terms of both research and teaching. It offers degree programmes in both Danish and English, and is part of a multi-disciplinary environment at the Danish School of Education.

Research
We are looking for candidates with a research profile in the anthropology of organisations, with a particular focus on cultural learning processes and technology.

Organisations are social arrangements set up for particular purposes, and so the anthropology of organisations is understood broadly as an interest in exploring everyday life in organisations, with a particular focus on the uses of technology. This includes the study of the processes by which people learn to become part of organisations, and/or studies of the way in which people use technology in their everyday practices within organisations.

And it also includes a focus on emerging technology and cultural learning processes, for instance how technologies become culturally imagined, adopted, materialised and embedded in individual and shared activities.

The Department of Educational Anthropology emphasises the importance of research of a high international standard, including interdisciplinary collaboration, participation in collective research projects and the attraction of external research funding.

The successful applicants for associated professorship must be able to document scientific production at an international level, as well as scholarly contributions to theoretical, methodological and thematic developments within the field of organisational anthropology.

Teaching
The Department of Educational Anthropology offers graduate degree programmes in both Danish and English, so the successful applicant should be ready and able to teach and supervise in both Danish and English.

The teaching at the department focuses generally on educational practice and processes in settings as varied as educational institutions, workplaces and civil society. The successful applicant will be required to teach existing courses as well as developing new courses related to the educational anthropology programmes of the department. Teaching experience will be required in one or preferably more of the following areas:
- The ethnographic exploration of organisations
- Everyday work practices, cultural learning processes and technology
- The relation between emerging technologies and learning processes.

If an assistant professor is appointed, he/she will be required to complete a course in university teaching designed especially for assistant professors.

Talent development
If an assistant professor is appointed, he/she will be expected to develop his/her supervision capabilities at MA level.

If an associate professor is appointed, he/she will be expected to contribute to talent development within the field of educational anthropology, and to supervise PhD students as well as teaching and developing PhD courses.

Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance in research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with civil society actors or the public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants should document any prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange.

Qualifications
The successful applicant for the assistant professorship must have a PhD or the equivalent in anthropology or another relevant field in the social sciences or humanities, and must be able to document:
• A research profile in the anthropology of organisations, with a particular focus on cultural learning processes and technology
• Fieldwork experience in the relevant area of research
• An internationally oriented research profile

• Experience of or the potential for obtaining external research funding
• Experience of or interest in interdisciplinary teaching, including innovative teaching methods

The successful applicant for the associate professorship must have a PhD or the equivalent in anthropology or another relevant field in the social sciences or humanities, as well as research and teaching qualifications equivalent to those acquired in an assistant professorship, and must also be able to document:

Applicants must be able to teach and publish in English. If the successful applicant cannot speak Danish, she/he will be required to learn Danish within a period of approximately two years.

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the department’s academic environment. We emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students.
