The Danish School of Education at Aarhus University invites applications for an assistant/associate professorship in materiality and learning environments.

The assistant professorship is a full-time, three-year training position which begins on 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The associate professorship is a permanent position which begins on 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position is based at DPU campus Emdrup/Copenhagen. The successful applicant will be part of either the Department of Educational Theory and Curriculum Studies or the Department of Educational Anthropology.

It is important that the successful applicant takes part in the daily activities of the department, including both teaching and supervising. Since the department is situated in both Aarhus and Copenhagen, the successful applicant should expect some travel activity between Aarhus and Copenhagen.

The position
The assistant/associate professor must have expertise in the social and cultural dimensions of materiality within the context of learning in formal and informal learning spaces. This may comprise one or more of the following areas connected to materiality: social material practices, didactic thinking in relation to the field of materiality, the cultural analysis of objects and artefacts, performativity and social aesthetics.

In the application, the applicant should explicitly present her/his vision and plans for the development of materiality studies at Aarhus University with respect to research and teaching.

Applicants with expertise in qualitative methods (e.g. ethnographic fieldwork, classroom observations and interviews) will be preferred. The successful applicant must be willing to participate in consolidating and expanding the field in terms of both teaching and research.

Research
We are looking for a candidate with a research profile in materiality studies and learning environments.  More specifically, we will prefer applicants with a specific research focus on the relation between things, spaces, body and action as well as sensations of and experiences with materiality analyses in relation to learning.

The successful applicant will be expected to develop new and relevant research on a theoretical and methodological level in the field between cultural analytical, anthropological and learning perspectives. The successful applicant will – depending on their academic profile – be based at the Department of Educational Theory and Curriculum Studies or the Department of Educational Anthropology, Campus Emdrup/Copenhagen. Both departments place emphasis on research of a high international standard, including interdisciplinary collaboration, participation in collective research projects and the attraction of external research funding.

Teaching
The assistant/associate professor must be able to teach in the Master’s degree programme in material culture (hosted at the Department of Educational Theory and Curriculum Studies), but must also be able to contribute to teaching teams at the Department of Educational Anthropology. The position involves teaching duties as well as responsibility for the development of the Master’s degree programmes involved.
The teaching generally focuses on educational practice and processes as well as more informal settings in civil society. Teaching experience will be required in one or more of the following areas:
• Conceptualisation and theory in the field of materiality
• Conceptualisation and theory in material culture in the context of learning environments
• Focus on the creation of meaning with materiality and the use of things in formal and informal learning spaces
• Qualitative methods, e.g. ethnographic field methods, classroom observations, interviews, life stories
The assistant professor will be obliged to complete a course in university teaching designed especially for assistant professors.
The associate professor will be expected to teach and supervise students at all levels (BA, MA and PhD) and contribute to the development and application of innovative teaching methods.

Talent development
If an assistant professor is appointed he/she will be expected to develop his or her supervision capabilities at MA level.

If an associate professor is appointed he/she will be expected to contribute to talent development within the fields of educational anthropology or educational theory and curriculum studies. He/she will be expected to supervise PhD students as well as teaching and developing PhD courses.

Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance in research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with civil society actors or the public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants should document any prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange.

Qualifications
The successful applicant for the assistant professorship must have a PhD or the equivalent in the field of materiality and must be able to document:
• Expertise in the social and cultural dimensions of materiality within the context of learning, and specifically one – but preferably more – of the areas mentioned connected to materiality
• A specific research focus on the relation between things, spaces, body and action as well as sensations of and experiences with materiality analyses in relation to learning
• Expertise in the development of new and relevant projects in the field cultural analytical, anthropological and learning perspectives.
• cultural analytical-, anthropological- and didactic as well as learning theoretical and methodological perspectives
• An internationally oriented research profile
• A relevant and internationally oriented publication profile
• Experience of or interest in participation in national and international research networks
• Experience of or interest in communication and knowledge exchange
• Experience of interdisciplinary collaboration as well as interdisciplinary research
• Experience of or the potential for obtaining external research funding
• Experience of or interest in interdisciplinary teaching within one or more of the areas mentioned, including innovative teaching methods
• Experience of or interest in supervising student projects, and interest in researcher talent development.

The successful applicant for the associate professorship must have a PhD or the equivalent in the field of materiality, as well as research and teaching qualifications equivalent to those acquired in an assistant professorship, and must also be able to document:
• Expertise in the social and cultural dimensions of materiality within the context of learning, and specifically one – but preferably more – of the areas mentioned connected to materiality
• A specific research focus on the relation between things, spaces, body and action as well as sensations of and experiences with materiality analyses in relation to learning
• Expertise in the development of new and relevant projects in field between cultural analytical, anthropological and learning perspectives.
• An internationally oriented research profile
• A strong, relevant international publication profile
• Participation in national and international research networks
• Experience of participation in collective research projects
• Teaching experience in areas of relevance within one or more of the areas mentioned, interdisciplinary teaching experience including innovative teaching methods, and mastery of academic English in the classroom
• Proficiency in languages relevant to the area of research
• Fieldwork experience in the relevant area of research
• Experience of interdisciplinary cooperation
• Experience of attracting external research funding
• Experience of supervising student projects and an interest in researcher talent development.

The applicant must be able to teach and publish in English. If the successful applicant cannot speak Danish, she/he will be required to learn Danish within a period of approximately two years.
