Senior social scientist in natural resource management 953963

Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University, Denmark, ( is opening a position as senior social research scientist in the field of natural resource management. The position is expected to be filled by 1 April 2018, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Research area
One of the most profound sustainability challenges faced by society today is how to include the full spectrum of social rationality in the development and subsequent implementation and evaluation of public policy. Nowhere is this challenge more profound than in the natural resource management (NRM) sector, which has experienced severe pressure on its legitimacy during the recent couple of decades. Even the best scientific, technical or economic expertise is not sufficient to achieve the sociopolitical legitimacy necessary for the implementation of sustainable NRM policies.

The department has recently established Centre for Adaptive Nature Management ( ) to promote the integration of sociological and natural science disciplines and to further participatory nature management. The center functions as a ‘laboratory’ for a better integration of science in society developing new knowledge useful for the department as well as for other parts of the Faculty of Science and Technology. Further, the center will function as an educational hub for AU’s NRM related master- and PhD programs, as well as training programs for NRM practitioners and scholars from abroad. 

To strengthen the department’s research profile within the communicative and sociopolitical intersection of science and society, we are looking for a senior research scientist with communicative, sociopolitical and interdisciplinary competences to supplement the existing research portfolio on wildlife ecology with the following qualifications:
• Having a broad epistemological understanding across scientific paradigms and documented experience on cross- and interdisciplinary collaboration with natural scientists.
• Documented research experience from the field of environmental communication, including practical work in the interface of science and society, such as communication and deliberation processes between citizens, researchers and governmental agencies.
• Documented research experience on the sociopolitical dimension of natural resource management in general and wildlife management in particular.
• A documented record of research funding and leadership of research programs.
• A strong academic network.
• The ability to work independently. 
• Educational experience on master- and PhD level, including supervision of master- and PhD scholars.

About the Department of Bioscience
The Department of Bioscience has a staff of approximately 330 and more than 500 students. It is organized in 18 different sections working within the areas of freshwater, marine and terrestrial science, wildlife ecology, biodiversity, physiology and ecotoxicology. The position is in the Section of Wildlife Ecology located at Kalø.

This section has a staff of about 45 people, and is the core centre for research activities associated with wildlife management and nature conservation and the maintenance of biodiversity in Denmark, including national species and habitat monitoring programmes. We place considerable emphasis on understanding how human activities impact upon natural processes and systems, for example the effects of hunting on animal behaviour, distribution and population dynamics, assessing the impact of agriculture and forestry on natural vegetation, modelling population and genetic effects of landscape structure and fragmentation.

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.

Formalities and salary range
Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
