PhD in Hip Fracture Surgery Research, Department of Clinical Epidemiology, Aarhus University, Denmark 963325

Department of Clinical Epidemiology, Aarhus University is offering a PhD position commencing in September 2018 or as soon possible thereafter. 

The project is fully funded by Novo Nordisk Foundation for three years. 

The PhD fellow is expected to join the research group for surgical patient safety at the Department of Clinical Epidemiology, Aarhus University which is a highly specialized research department working with clinical epidemiology at an international level. The department provide free and independent research at an internationally high level within diagnostics, treatment and prognosis of patients. Thus, the successful applicant will enter into a vibrant and dynamic multidisciplinary international research collaboration. 

Project description
Hip fracture is the leading cause of mortality in older people with 30% mortality within a year and 50% of patients who never return to their previous functional level. Stroke and hip fracture share common risk factors and often co-exist in the same patients, however, the interplay between the two diseases are poorly understood. The successful applicant will work on a 3-year research project, investigating risk factors for stroke in hip fracture patients, and short- and long-term risk of complications and subsequent mortality in hip fracture patients with previous stroke. The project is designed as a series of population-based cohort studies using unique Danish health registries. Potentially risk factors include quality of hospital care, clinical and life style factors, and medication. Time-dependent multivariate regression and novel multi-state and marginal structural model analyses will be applied.

Required qualifications
• MD or similar degree in medicine
• A special interest and competencies in topics such as hip fracture, stroke and geriatric.
• High level of motivation, responsibility and flexibility
• Highly enthusiastic, ambitious and team-oriented personality
• Excellent communication skills in English (written and oral)

Formal requirements
The position is available for a 3-year period. Note that it is a prerequisite that PhD candidate is enrolled as a PhD student at Aarhus University Graduate School of Health ( in a separate procedure before starting as a PhD student.
