Senior Scientists and Tenure Track scientist in Atmospheric Modelling 965141

The Department of Environmental Science at Aarhus University, Roskilde, invites applications for two positions as Tenure Track scientist or senior scientist in atmospheric modelling to strengthen the research capacity, research-based advisory and teaching activities at the department. The two positions are to be filled by August 1, 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. This is subject to negotiation. 

The department of Environmental Science:
The Department of Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary department under the Faculty of Science & Technology at Aarhus University. The expertise of the department ranges from physics, chemistry, microbiology, social science, geography, economics, to policy analysis. Basic as well as applied research is conducted on some of the major challenges faces society, such as pollution and pollution control mechanisms, management of land, soil, water, air and biodiversity, protection of ecosystem services, climate change, and energy systems. Advisory services within these areas are offered to ministries and other stakeholders. Currently, about 140 staff and PhD-students are working at the department. Further information can be found at

The selected candidates will be affiliated with the Section for Atmospheric Modelling. The research is targeted towards an understanding of the fundamental atmospheric processes transport, chemical conversion, dispersion and deposition of air pollution. The section develops, tests, and applies local to hemispheric scale air pollution models that integrate with environmental and health impacts, economic considerations and climate change. The aim is to provide the state-of-the-art capacity in Denmark for research, development, application, teaching and decision support within the area of air pollution modelling and integrated assessment modelling. The work will take place in a close cooperation with other sections in the Department working with topics like emission inventories, atmospheric measurements (routine monitoring as well as field studies), environmental economic, environmental social science, environmental geography.

Expertise within the section includes:
• Atmospheric physics and chemistry, mathematical and numerical methods and computer science
• Long-range transport modelling covering the Northern Hemisphere, Europe, Denmark and including governing physical and chemical processes
• Local scale modelling including governing physical and chemical processes on a scale of an urban area, an urban street as well as point sources like stacks on industry and power plants
• Weather forecast modelling from hemispheric scale down to urban scale
• Operating and further developing integrated model systems covering all scales for 3-days forecasting as well as integrated assessment modelling with focus on the impact on human health, the environment and climate
• Modelling impact of climate change on air pollution loadings with special focus on Europe and the Arctic environment
• Taking part in integrated monitoring where state of the environment is assessed through combined use of measurements and model calculations

Description of the positions:
The senior scientist and tenure track scientist in atmospheric modelling are expected to:
• Actively contribute to the project portfolio in the department by taking part in applications for externally funded research projects
• Apply, further develop and test atmospheric models – one of the positions will mainly have focus on local scale dispersion modelling whereas the other position will have more focus on chemistry-transport modelling on mesoscale to long-range transport scale
• Take active part in developing and enhancing interdisciplinary collaboration both internally and externally. The latter with both national and international partners
• Contribute to the departments advisory activities for authorities as well as private companies
• Supervise graduate (Master and PhD level) students in thesis research projects
• Contribute to teaching on graduate courses and to the development of a new education in environmental science

The positions require a background in meteorology, physics, geophysics, mathematical modelling, chemistry, or related disciplines. Qualifications within development, testing and application of atmospheric models are expected. Experience in chemistry-transport modelling, with studies of physical/chemical processes in relation to atmospheric chemistry-transport models, numerical modelling and statistical methods will be highly desirable. Good communication skills and experience with cooperation with authorities is an advantage. The candidate is expected to be enthusiastic about working in an interdisciplinary academic environment. The position requires a highly motivated scientist who is comfortable with teamwork.

Applicants at the Tenure Track (assistant professor) level should as minimum hold scientific qualifications at PhD graduate level, and preferably be able to demonstrate publication activity independent of supervisors, and have at least 2-3 years’ experience on
ost-graduate research. The successful applicant must show evidence of an emerging productive publication record. Participation in national and international networks of researchers is preferable.

Applicants at the senior scientist (associate professor) level should in addition to PhD degree, have at least 4-5 years’ experience of post-graduate research. The position requires a proved track record of successful external research funding, as well as a proven publication record in international peer reviewed ISI journals.  Experience with international collaboration is required. A demonstrated research leadership and ability to define and manage research projects is desirable as is a demonstrated ability to successful supervising of PhD students and students on Master/bachelor thesis projects. Experience with consultancy/advisory projects is desirable as is the capability and interest in delivering high-quality undergraduate/graduate teaching.

As part of the Aarhus University Tenure Track Programme, the University carries out a mid-way evaluation to review the progress of the tenure track candidate after three years, according to the same criteria used in the final tenure review. The final tenure review is conducted after five and a half years. If the review is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor/Senior Researcher at Aarhus University.

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.

Formalities and salary range
Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
