My Ph.D. project investigates how blocks, bricks and constructive play can be viewed as an integrated part of built environment education in Danish preschools.
Since Denmark adopted its first national architecture policy in 2007, there has been increasing focus on built environment education for children. It is emphasized that children should be introduced to architecture, as it can contribute to cultural, historical, and democratic awareness. In recent years, sustainability has furthermore become an important dimension of built environment education. The project therefore explores the materials and materiality of blocks and bricks and investigates how preschool teachers may facilitate conversations with children about sustainable materials and environments through block play.
I draw on posthuman and new materialist theory, investigating the entanglements of humans and materials in pedagogical practice. Methodologically, the project is grounded in the arts-based research method called A/R/Tography, a practice that intertwines the roles of artist, researcher, and teacher. The research is conducted in collaboration with preschool teachers from three Danish preschools, and educators from the children’s wing at the art museum `Louisiana Museum of Modern Art´.
