The Department of Clinical Medicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Clinical Professor and chair in the field of Neurology as per 1. December 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a combined position at Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital and is a permanent full-time position.
As a clinical professor and chair at the Department of Clinical Medicine, you will be part of what is probably the largest health science research department in Denmark. Our clinical research covers all the medical specialties and takes place in close collaboration with the university hospital and the regional hospitals in the Central Denmark Region. We have approx. 30,000 square meters of modern research facilities for experimental surgery and medicine, animal facilities and also advanced scanners at our disposal. The department has overall responsibility for the Master's degree programs in medicine and in molecular medicine. At the department we are approx. 425 academic employees and the same number of PhD students cooperating across disciplines. As a clinical professor and chair, you will be working on Aarhus University Hospital in the Central Denmark Region. You can read more about the department here and about the faculty here.
The Department of Neurology employs 75 medical doctors of which 47 are specialists in neurology and cover all significant subspecialties. The staff includes 6 clinical professors, and 10 associate professors. Between 3 and 6 Ph.D.-students and 2 -4 research year students graduate from the department annually. We publish approximately 150 scientific papers in international medical and specialized journals each year. The research activity covers research within many aspects of neurology including stroke, movement disorders, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, dementia, sleep disorders, neuromuscular disorders and clinical neurophysiology.
We engage in a wide range of clinical and laboratory collaborations and cover detailed basic research methodologies, model-animal projects and health service and organizational research contributions. We have a well-established training program for upcoming young scientist. The research is considered the core element in maintenance and development of the department’s clinical functions.
As Clinical Professor and Chair of Neurology, you will become the head of research for a very strong research team in the department. The department covers a broad range of most neurological subspecialties, and there is a competent research tradition across the department. In addition, the department has a very strong research network, which you in your role as Clinical Professor and Chair can draw upon. The position as Clinical Professor and Chair furthermore includes a university-funded ½ secretary and a corresponding ½ administrative or technical staff member at your disposal. As chair professor, you are the head responsible for the undergraduate teaching in neurology in the Central Denmark Region and at Aarhus University. There is a clear expectation that you will lead this teaching as the person ultimately responsible, but the concrete tasks regarding teaching, exam planning, and so on can be delegated.
Your job responsibilities
As Clinical Professor and chair in the field of neurology, you will have joint responsibility for the maintenance and development of the department's research and teaching environment for alle neurological subspecialties and cross all disciplines, and you will contribute to the implementation of the faculty's overall research strategy. You are expected to contribute – both independently and in collaboration with others – to the development of the department by leading research of high international quality and contributing to ensuring a high academic and didactic standard in the teaching. Qua your excellent collaborative skills and a broad academic network, you contribute to the academic development at Aarhus University and to the university’s profile both nationally and internationally.
As Clinical Professor and chair in the field of neurology, you have the overall responsibility for the theoretical and practical education in neurology, in the whole of Central Denmark Region Midtjylland. It will be expected that you participate and lead all aspects of providing a state-of-the-art neurological pre-graduate education such as lectures, developing learning goals, organise examination and clinical training. You will together with the head physician and the head nurse constitute the department leadership. The team members have equal and shared responsibilities and decision influence for all aspects of leading the department, each making use of their different professional competences.
Your main tasks will consist of:
- Lead and develop the diverse research activities at the department.
- Driving force of the development of neurology in The Central Denmark Region.
- Ability to influence regional and governmental regulatory authorities.
- Participation in and equal contribution to the department leader team
- Leadership for teaching of medical students
- Research of high international quality, including publication in top international journals and the communicating your research in national and international academic networks.
- To contribute to the external research funding.
- Assessment and committee work at Aarhus University.
- Research-based collaboration with private and public-sector stakeholders as well as research-based consultancy.
- Dissemination of your research to the outside world.
- Technique-, Technology- and infrastructure development in a medical field with rapidly increasing caseload.

Your competences
You first and foremost have solid (research) leadership experience, which you are ready to put into play in collaboration with the rest of the department management and the researchers in the department. You have furthermore established yourself as a prominent clinical researcher within neurology, and you possess solid research and teaching qualifications at a high international level. You have shown the ability to initiate and develop ways of improving and expanding the research within all fields of the speciality. You have solid experience as main PhD-student supervisor and has shown strong abilities towards career development for colleagues on all academic levels from junior- to senior-level. You have broad national and international cooperative partnerships and great experience of research partnerships with private and public-sector stakeholders. You have also documented ability to attract external funding.
You are ready to take responsibility for the development of the department's research and education at the highest international level and for ensuring that we maintain a good work environment. You naturally involve yourself in interdisciplinary collaboration at departmental, faculty and university level as well as nationally and internationally.
We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English. International applicants are expected to learn Danish, and Aarhus University arranges Danish teaching. Spoken language is Danish.
